Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 That's the biggest non-profit donor to Planned Parenthood breaking ties with them. (...at least for the time being.) If you read the second article, it's apparent that not all of the local Komen affiliate offices are falling in line. Washington Post: Komen’s Planned Parenthood decision all about politics Huffington Post: Susan G. Komen Loses Support After Planned Parenthood Decision From the Huffington Post: "After partnering with Planned Parenthood for the past five years to provide cancer screenings to low-income patients, Komen announced on Tuesday that it would sever ties with the family planning provider because it is under investigation in Congress. However, the groups that prompted that investigation are anti-abortion advocacy organizations that have long criticized Planned Parenthood over the fact that some of its clinics offer abortions."
Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 Not a single comment from the P & R crowd?
Clyde Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 I read where Mayor Blooomberg made a $250k donation to PP today.
Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 One thing I would ask is, if Komen is planning on donating the money elsewhere for the same purpose (mammograms and breast cancer screening), what is this such a big problem? Planned Parenthood has always claimed that the funds from Komen were being used exclusively for the purpose of mammograms and breast cancer screening, so shouldn't Planned Parenthood, as a "healthcare provider", be relatively content with the fact that the money will still be used for the same thing?

Yes. Did they make the statement that they would continue to donate the money to the same causes?
Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 Yes. Did they make the statement that they would continue to donate the money to the same causes? They have not, at this point, made that statement. However, after calling Komen's Cincinnati Affiliate Office, I was informed that it is the intent (on a national level) for the organization to do so.

rockmom Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I don't really have a problem with the decision. Any entity or individual should be able to donate their funds as they see best fits their ideaology. If a Congressional investigation makes SGK uncomfortable, I feel certain they'll find another organization to help fund.
Clyde Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Komen instituted a policy that says they will not partner with any organization "under investigation." Considering that it doesn't seem to take much to get Congress to investigate that would seem to leave the Komen folks open to politically-motivated investigations. Why wouldn't the policy simply be based upon the outcome of an investigation?
Clyde Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 For some reason they have not stopped donations to Penn State U which is under federal scrutiny.
75center Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Have the feds launched an official investigation of PSU? If so, is it due to the assistant coach? I haven't heard anything about it.
rockmom Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 This seems to be having a reverse effect for Planned Parenthood. 6000 donors have donated ~$400K in the last 2 days. That's an average of $66.67 per donation. While I still don't have any issue with SGK making the decision they did, it actually seemed to work in PP's favor. Not only is the funding in place until the end of the term of the committment, but donations have taken a huge uptick, theoretically boosting PP financially in difficult times.
Voice of Reason Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Donations to Planned Parenthood have already replaced the Komen money and then some. Critics also have pointed out that Komen’s decision to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood came after Karen Handel, an unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate from Georgia who strongly opposes abortion, became Komen’s senior vice president for public policy. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120203/NEWS/302020231/Locally-Planned-Parenthood-Komen-try-stay-above-fray?odyssey=nav|head

I never get upset one way or the other in these situations because every person or company gets to make a choice (as long as it's legal) AND they have to live with the consequences.
