I'm a huge fan of tradition, and recently, while looking at the new helmets on another thread, I got to wondering what schools have not deviated from their basic helmet design for years - in some cases, decades.

 

What schools have turned the helmet design into a tradition in and of itself? One that the kids now start to feel a reverence for?

 

Name the school, how long they've had the helmet (if you know). Descriptions would be nice; pix would be better!

 

The first ones that come to mind for me are:

 

St. X

Trinity

Danville

 

Not sure how long each of these schools have used their current helmets, but I can't remember a previous design from the ones they use now...

Bowling Green has had the same helmet for as long as I've been following them. Basic Notre Dame design - gold helmets. I know that once upon a time they had the red, white, and blue water tower that's here in BG on their helmets, but I don't think that's been for more than 25 years.

Mayfield has never changed their helmet unless you count using leather

Covington Catholic has had the same logo on their helmet for a long time. Couldn't tell you how long though.

Danville

 

Danville actually made a slight change last season. They got rid of the classic silver helmet and replaced it with a white helmet. The logo is the same; the entire thing basically looks exactly like the white UK helmets under Hal Mumme. I don't know if they are sticking with it again this season or not.

Covington Catholic has had the same logo on their helmet for a long time. Couldn't tell you how long though.

 

Same decal but they did change to the Royal blue from the navy.

Rockcastle County with the traditional script ROCK with old school white helmet. Has had it unchanged since 1991.

Bellevue has had the Michigan helmets for as long as I can remember.

Correct. I'd honestly like to see them go back to the navy, but I think there are too many folks around who like the royal blue too much. The helmets were originally white with a block-letter "C" in blue on the sides, but i believe that only lasted for 5 or so years.

Belfry's is pretty unique and hasn't changed in a long time.

I'm really curious to hear about the helmets that have remained essentially unchanged since the 80s or even 70s....

They used to have the big B, but they switched it to the skull a long time ago. I'm not sure of the year, but sometime in the early 90s. I'd guess they have worn the new ones for 15 years, give or take.

I know when Belfry visited Ft Thomas in 89 for the Semi's they had a Skull and Bones on their helmets......Very nice Football team to boot that year!!!!:thumb:
