Trinity/Highlands Scrimmage

Featured Replies

There it is. Isn't that a weird fact that the two "superpowers" have only played twice in the regular season, ever? Both schools should be ashamed of this. They are both afraid to play each other.

You have some type of weird obsession with that issue. Time to see a shrink.:D

All of these posts for a scrimmage game, just think what it would be like for a real game!

It pretty easy on the 13th to understand what will happen on BGP's at around 10pm or so! The winning team will brag about the win and the loser will just state, it was a scrimmage game!

Get together and play a real game!

Does anyone know the circumstances of how this Highlands-Trinity scrimmage got arranged (such as which program contacted the other)? Also, is the arrangement just for this year or will Highlands be traveling to Louisville to scrimmage Trinity in 2011?

It must be Trinity ducking Highland's on scheduling a real game since they haven't beat the Bird's in over four decades! LOL

I know the opportunity to scrimmage came about as a result of the uncertainty surrounding who would be Male's coach. Redman either had officially retired/resigned or had let Mueller know it was coming. There was some uncertainty as to who would be Male's next coach and whether the next coach would want to continue to scrimmage Highlands in game type conditions. I don't know if Mueller reached out to Beatty or vice versa, nor do I care. Just glad to see it happen. Like others I'd like to see them regularly schedule regular season games. I don't know if Highlands and X will scrimmage next year in Louisville. I do know that when Wolfe ( Highlands grad) was named as head coach at Male, he contacted Highlands to see if they could scrimmage again this year, but Mueller had already agreed to scrimmage Trinity. Which somewhat leads me to believe that when the existing agreement with T ends, Highlands might go back to scrimmaging Male if for no other reason than Wolfe is a Highlands grad. But that is merely speculation on my behalf. Who knows, maybe we'll continue to scrimmage T for a long time. If they can't play during the regular season, a scrimmage is the next best thing. I hope the arrangement with T is at least for two years as I'd like the opportunity to visit T's football complex. I hear that it's quite impressive.

Trinity seems to have taken on a more regional approach to scheduling games in recent years, playing teams from Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee. They still have two of the three big Catholic schools on their schedule in St. X and Lexington Catholic, while also having played Covington Catholic in the past. Outside of their Louisville district games the only other Jefferson County school on the schedule is Manual.

Highlands, on the other hand, has always had a good number of opponents available in northern Kentucky. Playing teams like Dixie, Beechwood, Ryle, and Boone County, among others, had made it easier for them to schedule games (although that may be getting tougher).

My point in this is that part of the reason Trinity and Highlands have rarely played is their scheduling philosophies. Highlands can play nearly an entire schedule with 30 miles from their home. Trinity has taken on a more "national power" approach. It probably can become difficult to match up open dates and perhaps neither side really wants to do that.

Keep in mind that Beechwood and Boone just came back on Highlands schedule last year, after somewhat extended breaks. I think the last time we'd played Boone in the regular season prior to last year was 04. It may have been an even longer break with Beechwood. But your point is a good one. There are a decent number of N. Ky schools willing to play Highlands again. I think part of that is a result of a change in philosophy by Mueller. You just don't see the 70s and 80s to nothing scores coming of Highlands games any more. Not sure it's because Dale has gotten "soft" and is trying to rebuild his relationships with N. Ky coaches or because he realized that with a running clock his back up players weren't getting as much playing time and experience as they would if the score could be kept below the running clock theshhold. But whatever the reason, I believe that it's actually getting easier for Highlands to schedule N. Ky schools. Plus with Cincy being right across the river, Highlands has usually been able to get a strong Cincy school to help fill in the schedule much closer to home. Which may be the reason Highlands hasn't had to take the regional approach. Don't forget also that we have in the not too distant past played LexCath and Lou X. So if those game help qualify T's schedule as regional, Highlands has as recently as 08 played LexCath and as recently as 06 played Lou X plus we played Cols DeSales in 05 and 06. If any thing it's the willingness of Beechwood and Boone to again play Highlands starting last year that has made it possible for Highlands to complete a schedule without having to travel very far outside the N. Ky area but when those games weren't there, Highlands found itself in the same boat as T: needing to have a regional schedule. My guess is that the T administration would be pleased as could be if Beatty could put a quality schedule together with just Lou teams and minimize travel costs.

However, Highlands has demonstrated a willingness to travel for non-district/non-playoff games in recent years. In just the last few years alone, HHS has gone to Louisville (to play Central, St. X, Manual and now Eastern in 2010), Lexington (to play LexCath), Somerset (to play Pulaski Southwestern), Columbus, Ohio (to play Columbus DeSales), Richmond (to play Madison Central) and even Hopkinsville (to play Hoptown). A few years before that HHS played in Danville (against both Danville and Boyle County). If a NKY team is willing/able to travel to Hopkinsville, I'd say they could go to a lot of places in Kentucky to play.

I have no idea what is in Highlands' calculus when it comes to setting up the schedule, but looking at where they've been willing to go in recent years I do believe Highlands has been having some difficulties filling out its schedule. Plus, HHS is now playing a team (Ryle) twice during the season. I wonder if any other programs in the state of Kentucky are doing what Ryle and HHS are doing this year?

One thing that's surely affected this is that Highlands has been blessed/cursed (depending upon how you look at it) with having a small district in which to play, leaving it with several openings in the schedule.

Everybody knows that Trinity and Highlands currently share the state record for most official football titles (19 each)...

... but, some may not be aware of how close Trinity and Highlands are in the 'national rankings race.' The USA Today has been putting out their 'Super 25' since 1982. From 1982 through 2009, four Kentucky programs have finished at least one season ranked in the USA Today's final rankings list:

- Highlands leads the way with 5 (in 1982, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2009).

- Trinity is right on their heels with 4 (in 1989, 1990, 2002 and 2007).

- Clark County has 1 (in 1991).

- Saint Xavier has 1 (in 2004).

When you look at what Highlands' and Trinity's average Super 25 rankings have been (for the years they have been ranked), Trinity just edges out Highlands; Trinity's average ranking has been 14th while Highlands' has been 15th.

When you look at the highest ranking each of these two programs has achieved, it's also very close: Highlands has a 3rd-place finish (2009) and Trinity has a 4th-place finish (2002).

Oh, and one last thing... these two programs have met only twice, and wouldn't you know it... each has won one game against the other.

These programs are very similar on paper.

BTW, I've unofficially dubbed this game the "Best in the Bluegrass Preseason Showdown." If Highlands manages to win, it will then also be known as "The Take-Down in Caketown!" If Trinity wins, it will be referred to as "scrimmage/practice."

Interesting thing too about both schools highest final rankings nationally is that in both of those years they defeated an Ohio team.

Trinity over Elder in 02 and HHS over X in 09.

Of course the fact that Elder ended up winning the Ohio DI title that year instead of losing early in the playoffs will go without mention. :sssh:

Another "similarity" is that in their two games against each other, each team defeated the other by the same margin of victory - 13 points.

Man, all this makes me wonder whether the scrimmage will end in a tie? I'm guessing they don't do OTs in scrimmages!

With age comes wisdom.....

It may not matter in the record books, but make no mistake about it: this scrimmage will matter to both teams. These two have been locked in a cold war of state championship supremacy for several years. The chance to actually cross swords, even if just informally, is an event to which both teams (and even more so, their fans) will be looking forward.

Well said my friend! :thumb:

Seriously, if Highlands wins this thing I'm gonna have some t-shirts made to commemorate the occasion. I don't know exactly what it will say, but I can promise you it'll be dramatic.

Shaking my head but also have to :lol::lol:!!

And if the Birds lose...what will your t-shirts say?

Still "Virtual Champs" :lol::lol:

Your killing me! :lol::lol::lol:

I love when Highlands plays up, if Highlands loses then we have the public school with only rougly only 400 boys arguement, if Highlands wins then Highlands can rub it in their face the we are a public school and have rougly only 400 boys and we beat them.

Well said my friend! :thumb:
So how many of you Louisvillians are coming up for this first annual edition of The I-71 Bowl?
