UK = SEC dormat in 2009

 

They won't come within 10 points of Vandy, GA or UT.

 

UK would have a pretty good season if only they could schedule about 6 or 7 games against Louisiana-Monroe this year.

 

Boy, UK was fortunate to beat Auburn, or else this season would be a total joke.

UK will beat Eastern to get to 5. the next 3 games are the worries. Vandy just played a good game agianst Georgia Tech, Georgia is down but it is at Athens, and UT is playing better and better. This at best for UK is 6-6 season, but more like a 5-7.

The negative Newton comments are a joke. Not that he doesn't deserve some criticism, but the posts blaming the loss on him.

 

The kid played a pretty decent game, his best so far. Did he have his flaws, absolutely. Did that pick hurt, really, really bad? Yes. But Newton grew up a bit in this game, throwing the ball much better and having some impressive runs. He still holds onto the ball to long, and his decision making is hit or miss, but he is a TRUE FRESHMAN who is only playing in his third game. If UK's defense shows up we aren't even having this discussion because Newton played well enough to win.

 

The last drive of the game was very impressive to me, he did have the Cats marching down the field, and if Cobb wasn't hurt (which I believe he was very much hurt and was only used as a decoy in the 4th quarter) he has another weapon he could have targeted which could have made the difference.

 

This game was lost, in my opinion, by a banged up defense. The injuries have mounted and it showed. Lindley's presence is needed (and would have been the difference against SC in my opinion) and Johnson didn't look 100%. The secondary with Lindley is far better than without, and no matter how you view Johnson when he is healthy he is a difference maker.

 

I'll take the optomistic approach once again because I feel it is warrented. I'm happy with Newton's progress and I'm excited about the prospects of the freshman reciever King as well. I see 6-6 or 7-5 to end this season and a trip to a decent bowl game.

Excellent post. Anyone blaming a loss on a Frosh with very little game experience is really stretching it a bit. The defense lost the game. Newton played about as well as he could. He is still green, but I think there is enough to him talent wise that you can tell he will be an adequate QB, IMO. I'm also with you on King. I think he needs to play more.

Game was lost on the defensive side of the ball. Why UK continued to use a nickel package is beyond reason.

 

As far as Newton goes I just don't see the potential greatness. The kid seems to lack the intangables. Maybe this comes with experience but right now he seems to have no feel for the game and no touch on his passes.

Pretty easy, they got no points in the redzone and MSU took 5 minutes off the clock. Watch the replay, he had a wide open WR in standing in the end zone too.

 

I think the kid is going to be good, but he cost them tonight. Actually, conservative playcalling and the rush defense cost them. Worse case scenerio you throw that ball away.

The offense last night was not great, but it gave the Cats an opportunity to win. The real problem I had last night was with the defensive scheme/play calling/adjustments (lack thereof).

 

This may be off by a bit, but I believe we had our nickel package (Taiedo Smith in at DB in place of one of our 3 LBs) in the game about 90% of the time. This was clearly the gameplan going in, and it sort of makes sense considering they line up in 3 and 4 WR packages and spread the defense out. However, somewhere in between letting MSU get a school rushing record and getting completely man-handled at the point of attack all night you would think a coach would try and make an adjustment. Not Steve Brown/Rich Brooks. There can't possibly be anything wrong with their game plan, nope. The players just needed to figure out how to make a play even though they were disadvantaged and out of position because of the play call.

 

They ran for 350 yards on this defense, yet we almost never put more than 7 in the box. I just cannot wrap my head around this. How many times did they run that same counter play pulling the backside guard and the wing back/fullback letting Dixon follow. I'm not a college coach, but come on, I could tell you what play they were going to run and we still did nothing to stop it!

 

I'm not even going to get into our lack of blitzing or refusing to play anything but man to man (a la Billy Gillispie) in the secondary. In the Auburn game a couple weeks ago, we lined up in our base 4-3 most of the game and shut down a team with a similar spread attack. I'm not going to pretend like I should be calling plays, but if you are getting crushed in an aspect of your game plan shouldn't you change something to try and stop it?

Totally agree. If you're complacent with trying to get 6 wins and an obscure bowl bid then he's your man.

Yeah I was real happy with all those bowl games we were going to before Brooks and Joker got here. I agree the last series left a lot to be desired in the red zone, but we did put up 24 points it's not like we were shut out. Again as has been stated many times the defense got gashed last night and made very few adjustments coach Brown let us down.
