Mississippi State 31 Kentucky 24

Cobb is great football player and will always get decent numbers but there is no surprise left. SEC defenses will try to keep him from those long 40 plus yard runs. Until Ky stretches the field. State came in with a great game plan tonight.

Cobb had over 140 yards of offense and a TD. I don't see how you say Miss. State stopped him. UK just went away from using him in the 2nd half, and I still think it had to be due to him being injured.

It's always the quarterback's fault. See Mike Hartline.

OK, we all know that the defense was much more than 50% the responsibility tonight in their inability to stop Dixon. But by the tone of your post, you indicate it's NEVER the QBs fault. You seriously lay none of this at Newton's feet? The guy is like a statue half the time as he's holding the ball and taking a sack.

Hartline is/was awful. That's pretty much indisputable. You can scream playcalling and all that all you want. Eventually the QB has to make the plays, and he most definitely did not.

My fault, you want me to echo what you're probably going to read everywhere else about how Dixon gashed the crap out of the UK defense? Forgive me for expressing the #1 thing on my mind at the point.

And yes, I'm blaming a true freshman's decision making. They lose the right to blame the fact he's a true freshman when they have a junior QB in Fidler that has at least every bit the tools at current that Newton does.

The reason your going to read over and over about Dixon is because that is how State won period. Who is they?

Kentucky gave up 31 first quarter points to Florida and there were calls to bench Hartline. Gave up points to Alabama, more calls to bench Hartline. Last time I checked, he doesn't play defense. Newton's play calling or lack thereof had NOTHING to do with how many yards Dixon ran for and had NOTHING to do with the secondary getting burned on the long TD pass.

They being anyone that would. UK coaches, fans, etc. It's a lame excuse. If your true freshman QB lacks the ability to make the correct decisions, then you have to look another direction. There are true freshmen that can handle it (See Barkley, Matt), and then there's ones that can't. And in a great many circumstances in the last few games I've watched, Newton has most definitely fallen into the latter.

I'm aware that's the majority of how State won, but what was that, two straight possessions inside the 20 there at the end where UK came away with nothing, nada, zip? Had they scored on at least one of those, we might just be talking about how good a game Dixon had in a loss. If UK scores when they should, they still could have won the game.

Your point would have some bearing if UK had, you know, not been down 31-0 to Florida at that point. No, he can't stop the defense from giving up points, but he's a huge part of them not scoring them in those games.

Nevertheless, those would not be the games I'd point to in saying that Hartline was awful. It's pretty easy to accept when they're up against an opponent that has them incredibly outgunned. It's the performances against the other opponents that make one question the team.

And yes, Newton does not deserve all or even most of the culpability of the loss. Most of it falls on the staff and the coaches. But he was absolutely a part of the problem tonight in key situations, and I just took from the tone of your post that you're saying Hartline and Newton are never to blame at all.

Cobb had 49 yards offense from scrimmage. 8 carries for 17 yards and a touch and the other 32 receiving. He had 142 return yards. So yes In my opinion State came in with an excellent game plan and stopped him. These stats came from the game center at UK athletics.

I think sometimes you have to step back and take a deep breathe. UK has been beat by arguably the top 2 teams in the Nation that are going to beat about everybody. Miss St has flown under the radar some but they have a top 20 rushing game which is going to keep you in games. UK is in trouble because they got in a bad situation before the season with no QB. They went out and signed two of the highest profile kids they have ever signed. The hope was to lean on the defense but they have battled injuries there and they lost a top 5 player in the nation up front because of a bizzare supplement case. It was already tough enough losing Pryor.

KY has done a pretty sorry job with Cobb overall IMO. He is the real deal and they've got to get creative getting him the rock then making him a big decoy off of that. Get him the rock first though!

Only saw the last 2 minutes of the first half. Didn't realize most of the yards had come on return yards. I just saw the stat they put up mid way thru the 3rd quarter.

Does anyone now conclude that Morgan Newton is a pocket passing, pro style quarterback? No way.

Very poor pocket presence at this point in his young career.

Definitely a dual-threat quarterback. Wants to run first, pass second.

On a positive note, he does show some playmaking ability.

No problem. I actually noticed it during the game on TV they were calling it like 16 TOUCHES for 150 yards which is a little misleading. Still Cobb is an all around great football player. I think State just thought if they could contain him on the long runs they could win.

If he wants to have success he will stick to being a pocket passer. Unless you're trying to tell us all that every incoming true freshman playing in his 3rd game already has pocket presence then I think you're way off base.

He's not a qb you can plan to run with other than occasionally.

Every true freshman of course does not have pocket presence early in their career.

Morgan Newton has a lot more improving to do than most young quarterbacks playing in the pocket. He is very uncomfortable staying in the pocket and going through his progressions. He must work extensively on his "clock" in the pocket. His internal "clock" does not work properly at this point.

Yes he is a good athlete, but I would have thought making reads and accurately throwing the football would have come easier to this quarterback with a 5 star rating out of high school.

"To come out and play the way we did - to not even show up - is very discouraging and disappointing. We played with no emotion. I do not know what to say. We did not play well across the board. I wish I knew why."
