I still keep thinking about that fumble by Alfonso Smith at the start of the 2nd half. UK was up 17-10 and had the ball to start the half and the fumble seemed deflating and Miss. St. had a short field and just gashed the D to even the score 17-17. I know he has been hurt but he has been a big letdown.

That was a big momentum swinger just like the fumble at the end of the half by Derrick Locke versus Alabama. I am not suggesting that Kentucky would beat Alabama, but we could have kept it close with a long-shot to win the ballgame.

I did not say he was slow, but looks slow. Probably because he is big. I was excited to go to this game because I was anxious to see him in live action. I was not dis-appointed.... If Locke did not return because of the injury, I stand corrected. I did not realize he had aggravated the knee. I thought he looked great on his carries.

 

I'll say it. Newton is slow. Or maybe, he's just not fast. Not bad on his feet, but I'd never mistake him for a RB

:thumb: I agree 110%. Newton is progressing. He made some bigtime 3rd down throws and showed a little bit better accuracy. Still overthrowing some, but getting better. I would like to see them put a little bit more on his shoulders. The problem was that in the trenches, UK wasn't as physical as they were against Auburn or for that matter in many of their games. Miss St just whipped them up front. The offense did enough to win and defense fell way short of what they needed. Not having Lindley and Micah not being 100% really hurt them, but Miss St just outworked the Cats in the trenches IMHO.

I would have like to seen Fidler get in there like he did the week before... nothing wrong with a two-headed quarterback as UK develops Newton.

The reason they lost to Miss St was up front. They gave up 300 yards rushing, and most of it to 1 guy, Dixon. If the D stops him like they did the first 3 years UK faced him, UK wins that game going away. They didn't, and they lost. Of course, they had no Lindley, Johnson at about 50% and those are 2 major cogs to the defense. I admit that Newton has a lot to learn, ... but go back and look at tape of Woodson in his 2nd & 3rd years at UK (redshirt frosh and soph seasons). Newton is already ahead of where Woodson was at that time. Still, .... a LONG way to go, but I think he will be fine.

Slow for a RB? Absolutely. But he has very good feet for a QB. No, he is no speedster. We'll never get he and Locke confused. But he reminds me of a young Derrick Ramsey, just more football savy at this stage and that works for me.

He is about 4.7 in the forty which is very good speed for a quarterback of his size in the system he is playing.

On the last drive (the only one where Joker opened up the passing game) he marched them from the 20 down to the MSU 16.

 

He made a bad decision on the INT, but that didn't cost the game.

 

I actually came away impressed with the offense. King is impressive, Matthews is starting to show up, and Cobb is Cobb.

 

If the defense doesn't give up 348 rushing yards :eek: then UK wins. Can't pin this on the offense, IMO.
