9th Region Preseason Coaches Poll

Multiple offers? from whom? and additional ones from who?

So your telling me a kid who couldn't even get enough minutes to break a sweat at the High School level got multiple offers at the D2 level and more?

If this kid was really that legit then NCC needs to find a new coach for not playing this kid. Any kid who is D2 worthy should be a star on the high school level. There are multiple kids who imo were much more skilled then this kid and only ended up at a D3 NAIA etc.

Yes. Couldn't agree with you more on all points. Let's just be happy for this young man that he is getting the opportunity to do something he loves. No matter what the level and I hope all players who want this opportunity get a chance to achieve it.

Also, that's great he worked his tail off to get noticed however that only helps so much. When it comes down to it you have to flat out be a player at the end of the day.

Looks like West Virginia Wesleyan has 23 players on their roster, which I have never seen on the D 2 level. I would think they most likely play a D 2 JV or maybe a freshman schedule. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think D 2's get scholly money to cover about 10 full scholarships. Of those 10, I would imagine their top 7 or 8 players are getting 90% of that money. Basically put, you can't give a 30K per yr scholly to 23 players.

From a business standpoint its a good deal for these colleges. If a college offers 12-15 "scholarships" ranging from $500 to $1000 each, those families still have to come up with over $20K. Not sure if this is the case here, just a thought.

True, not to take anything away from this kid. I think anyone who has seen him play knows he wasn't a legit D2 player. I think there is some inside connection because there were several players who were better than him who played before him. Hence why he didn't get much pt in High School.

Maybe he shined in AAU ball. Maybe they ran a different system.

Some D2s spread their scholarship money out thinly among all of their players.

Sometimes colleges need a good student to increase their team GPA. It works for both the kid and the college.

I'm sorry guys I'm just not buying it. Just my opinion though. I wish the kid the best. It's always great seeing kids playing college ball.

Trust me, NKU has missed the boat on some local players for at least the last 5-6 yrs.

Like who?

I've seen others mention Pelle and Romes. Pelle can certainly play. Whether or not NKU recruited him, and whether or not he could have been admitted, I guess depends on who you talk to.

NKU didn't miss on Romes. He was a really good high school player and he's a really good D-III player, no doubt. But, NKU's expectations as a program are on another planet from Mt. St. Joe's. Frankly, it's like comparing a NKU player who has done very well and saying UK missed on him.

Aside from these two though, and assuming I'm wrong, who else has NKU missed on?

I have to agree.:thumb:

Two that come to mind are the Belcher brothers from Pendleton Co. These two were definitely good enough to play at NKU.

I'm sure that a few of the kids mentioned could have played at NKU, but to say they have missed out is not even close to being correct. Have you seen NKU play? To be at or near the top in DII you have to have 2-3 DI players playing down. Like they had last year and now this year. Let's face it, the division I talent in this area want to go away to school and play DI, and you can't blame them. NKU has to recruit outside NK and Cin. to compete.

One that comes to mind is Nestheide (sp?) from CCH. He had a phenomenal College Career. Along with Romes of Beechwood.

I agree that NKU missed the boat on Nestheide. He had a great career @ Centre and led them to a top 5 ranking.

NKU told Nestheide that they were not going to recruit him after they showed a little bit of interest. Instead, they went after Ryan Patzwald from Anderson. Patzwald, at the last minute, decided to walk on at UC and play for Huggins. When Huggins got pushed out, Patzwald transferred to Kansas State.

Somewhere during that time frame, Patzwald also got a DUI.

It didn't help Nestheide that David McFarland was a year behind him. Heck, they also took Scotty Bibbins the following year.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying about the talent level that NKU is chasing these days. Seems to be a bit beyond NKY talent. But they did use Scott Bibbins a lot last year at PG, and they have Sorrell as a red-shirt freshman this year. So Bezold is keeping the Holy Cross pipeline alive. Pelle was way better than Bibbins during his High School days and is showing by becoming a pre-season DII All-American at West Liberty. I am not saying that NKU should recruit only kids of NKY, but they don't seem to pay a whole lot of attention to players who could contribute.

I think Bezold is doing some good things with the N Ky and Greater Cincinnati area. I think his hosting an Elite Camp last summer had good representation from N Ky and Cincinnati and allows NKU to get up close and personal with the local athletes.

It is hard to compete at the National level in D2 without the D1 transfers. They are going to miss on a local player like Pelle every now and then but for the most part if a local player was good enough to contribute I think NKU would recruit them.

There's no doubt that Pelle is a very good player, but he plays a 2. NKU has been loaded with shooting guards for years now. You have to recruit what you need. Bibbins is a very good point guard and that's what they needed at the time. Sorrell is a very good player but had to red-shirt because they were loaded at his position.

Pelle is a point guard. Played point at Silver Grove, played point for Shining Star and is playing point for West Liberty. Had a 169 assist last year as a sophomore.
