9th Region Preseason Coaches Poll

Featured Replies

Dont be so sure of that. The way the Birds have been working out with their 2/1/2 hr practices I'd say they are a team on a mission.

Do you think they will carry the ten seniors that have been in the program?

I'm also wondering whether Boone will carry the 9 seniors that have been in the program. I can't see all of them contributing. At least 3 played almost no varsity ball last year (1 played strictly JV). 6 of them are basically guards 6'0" or under. How would they all get PT, and what about the underclassmen?

Think Boone is one of the most interesting teams this preseason as far as trying to figure out potential starters and contributors.

Gabbard, Popp, Earls, Cotton and ??? who will round out starters. Do they look for size with Trevan Brown or athleticism with Travis Montgomery or is there one of the seniors who have been in the program in the running for that spot?

Thats a lot of seniors to carry and they also have a strong junior and sophomore class. When do those kids get any minutes at the varsity level to prepare them for next year?

Don't you think Holmes is on a greater mission to repeat as KY State Champs? I think they are.

I think Lay will start at the fifth spot initially. Brown could as he gets back from football. Brown and Montgomery will both see plenty of time, with Brown probably getting more this year, IMO.

It won't be easy, but I don't see how Holmes won't win. Rico and company are ready for state title number two and Henley will have them focused.

You would :D

Is that all they practice? :D

2.5 hour practices sound horribly boring & ineffective.

Very effective when you have Coach Flynn and his assistant Stevie Hunt working them. They have 24 kids they are workign with right now from Frosh-Varsity and they are mixing in not only basketball drills/offensive sets/scrimmaging but also plyometrics/weights after they do all the basketball stuff.

Any time on the floor this time of year is IMO effective.

2.5 hour practices are not effective at any time of the year.

I wouldn't consider what you described a 2.5 hour practice, though. It's more of a 45 minute - 1 hour workout session with a 1.5 - 2 hour practice. Now THAT can be effective & is a great way to begin the season.

Is Stevie Hunt the JV coach?

I disagree, this  is one of the most uninformed posts I've seen on here. Any player can go DIII or NAIA???? The best player in NKY (McFarland) last year went NAIA and a few went DIII.

If any player can play NAIA, name how many has went NAIA or higher in the last 5 years? NAIA does give athletic scholarships.

Also name one NAIA school or DIII for that matter that has 20 players on their roster.

Georgetown has 36 kids on their roster! NAIA has 11 scholarships to offer and can divide them up amongst multiple players. Very few have full athletic scholarships, most have zero athletic money!

Union College 22 players.

Transy has 29 players on their roster!

Thomas More had 20 last year.

It is just like NAIA and DIII football anyone who wants to be on the team can be on the team. Some NAIA football teams have upto a 130 kids on their roster and only 24 scholarships for the entire roster. These can also be divided up between a lot of players.

There are only 16 on the varsity roster.

McFarland got money and probably a decent chuck of change.

You are correct. I do not think many people realize that there are college programs that have JV teams. But those players on the JV roster are still playing NAIA basketball.

And to my earlier posts I should not have used such a broad brush when saying anyone can play in college(NAIA or D3) but should have said that most of the better players in each region.

Boone's starters will change mid-season just like they did last year. Just watch.
