Nope, not running it up in the least. Way back when I played my sophomore year we had the number 1 ranked defense in the state. It gave up 4.6 points a game. I played JV and all but for a game or two we were the best competition our varsity faced. Made them better and made us better. JV's got to play a lot in second half of games, and after going against that defense all week we were able to put points on the board against about anyone's varsity. I don't recall anyone ever accusing us of running it up. Sound about like the same situation.

French gets paid to score points and win games. It isn't his job to spot Boyle it is Johnson Centrals job to stop Boyle. Plus he was playing his JV, he also needs to make sure his back ups are ready if the number ones are not.

I wasn't at the game but I don't think that BC was running up the score. I sure hope he finds a game next season. It will be hard to replace it. I don't know what Matney expects but JC will never beat Highlands by dropping quality opponents like BC. IMO

IMO he's like a bully that got beat up and didn't like it.

Matney likes to break contract as well doesn't he, it seems he is always involved in this kind of thing.

JC has run the score up on everyone, Last year when they played Montgomery County he pulled his starters after they got up around 40-0 then when Montgomery County kept their starters in and scored he put his starters back in! I am glad someone did this to Matney, but this won't change anything, he will still be running up scores whenever he can.

Joe Pa at Penn St. always said it was your job to score points and his job to stop you and if he could not then he needed to get a better team. That pretty much sums it up for me.

 

The sun don't shine on the same dog's tailend every day, so Matney could use that as a motovational point at a later date. You get beat, move on and get better.

 

As for the score, I don't see that as running it up at all, there were alot of games with similiar scores from around the state, and I have not seen them complaining.:isurrender:

I would like to get some Johnson Central fans' take on this. I was not there so I can not say if it was "running it up." However I've known Rebel pretty much all my life and will take his word on it because he would have called it like it was.

 

I must say a 49-7 score is hardly running it up in this day and time.

 

The most glaring attempt to "not run up a score" that I ever saw was by Tom Duffy (one who was sometimes accused of "running it up."). Danville was playing Russell County in their perfect season of '84 and I believe it was something like 42 -0 just before half. Instead of punching one in from the one (they had to run another play), he had Keith Morgan take a knee. I'm not sure which would have been more embarassing. :thumb:

 

For real...personally, I think it would be much more humiliating to start taking knees well before the game was over to keep from scoring. That's basically saying, "The only way we can keep ourselves from scoring is to quit playing."

 

Humiliating. I'd rather get beat 100-0.

Not to mention, we're talking about Johnson Central here. It's not some team that can't compete or loses every week by an average margin of 40-50 points. This may not be an "up" year for them, but they aren't helpless. They're typically a pretty competitive school.

 

We get this from somebody every year. To be honest, I was afraid this thread was about Breathitt County and Mercer County when I saw "Did BC run up the score?". Breathitt County threw a TD pass late with the game clearly out of reach. I was relieved to see that it was regarding Boyle County.

 

And, allow me to give credit to Mercer County fans for not going that route. If they have, I've seen no evidence of it on BGP.

 

On a side note I was at the Breathitt Co. game and thought Holcomb did run the score up on Mercer Co. No reason to throw that ball to Fletcher at that point in the game. Throw it to someone else, ok, but not the best reciever on the team. Of course I guess it is better than running Fugate.

I get so sick of hearing this "running up the score" garbage every year. Sometimes you just play teams better than you...and sometimes you're better than them. But, as French said, you can't lay down and neglect your team just to keep from hurting somebody's feelings.

 

There are a lot of reasons to keep running your offense...perhaps you have big goals for the season and to get there you need to develop your passing game. A good time to work on that is when you have a comfortable lead. If you put your second unit in, you want those guys to gain experience...not just come in and hand the ball off and punt. As a coach, your primary responsibility is to develop your players and get your team to it's highest level. That includes working on weaknesses with the first unit when possible and allowing the backups (typically underclassmen) to play real football when they get the chance. Someday they will be the future of the program. That experience is invaluable for when they're starting.

 

Breathitt County has been on both ends of the spectrum. You'll never hear me cry about having the score ran up on my team.

If Boyle Co. ran up the score on JC then what the other nine Coaches going to say when BC scores 40+ on their teams?

If you put a team on the field it's their job to score, that's the JV's job also.

JC has did the same thing in the past, if you would of asked them I'm sure they would tell you that they put the JV in all those games in the 4th Q also. I know French well, he's not the type of man to just run up a score just because he can. But it is his job to get all of his kids ready for the next game. Good job French and all the boys in black
