Because he wanted his offense to run their 2 minute offense and he knew his starters were all going to be sitting on the bench the second half (which they were). So Beechwood ran their 2 minute offense to perfection and passed their way to a score at the end of the half. The other team's coach was seriously PO'd but Beechwood needed the work on their 2 minute offense. Guess what? In the state championship game Beechwood used their 2 minute offense to score a TD just before the half and that was the difference in the game. Sometimes coaches have long term reasons for calling plays in a game. As many others have said, it is up to the opposing team to stop them and learn from it if they don't.

 

Exactly what I'm getting at. The coach's responsibility is to his players and team first...if getting them to their best involves throwing a TD pass in a 40 point blowout, so be it.

Then they need to work on improving to get a chance to go to the playoffs.

My point was not every team gets "10 scrimmages". Some team's regular season counts.

So running the two minute drill against Trimble County, Ludlow, Frankfort, or Crittenden County somehow gave the Tigers the situation and real game experience to be able to execute it against Hazard? Other than the time on the clock what did the two (2) sitautions have in common that helped the Tigers?

I think you answered your own question. You can't truly simulate game conditions in practice. Running the plays in a game with the clock ticking and being successful were good experience for the team.

Too bad that a team can't simulate the time and game situation in practice because it would allow them to not have to put an extra 7 on the board against an inferrior opponent in a game and show some sportsmanship.

As far as running up the score, I will share a story involving Boyle County. It was a hard game to forget for either team.

 

In 2007, after three quarters, Henry Clay led Boyle County by a score of 40-10. The game was played at Boyle County. Henry Clay Coach Sam Simpson wanted to get some of his younger players in the game and began substituting some of the starter in the 4th quarter. Boyle County scored and scored and eventually, Sam put his starters back in. Henry Clay had totally lost their momentum. Boyle County continued to score and, in fact, took the lead by a score of 43-40 with about a minute to go.

 

Henry Clay did score to win that ballgame, but I bet at least at one point, Coach Simpson wished he had run up the score. He ended up needing every point he could get as it turned out. Maybe some of this year's Boyle County seniors remember this game as sophomores and realize you can't get enough points to be safe, sometimes. I am sure they do.

 

I truly do not think a team can run up the score too much. I have seen games in Kentucky high school football where a team completely outclasses another. Some coaches get upset when other coaches leave a particular player in to run up statistics, but otherwise, I have no problem with trying to score lots of points.

NOTHING...I repeat NOTHING you can do in practice equals doing it in a game.

 

I don't want this to turn into a thread jacking. I gave the example to show how something that may have looked "unsportsmanlike" actually had a definite purpose and an impact on winning the state championship. If you and others want to have a discussion about sportsmanlike behavior in general, start a thread on it.

I recall a district game against a Lexington team where matney ran the score up because he pulledhis starters and the other team didn't immeadiately pull theirs. Isn't this what just happened to him? I wasnt there, but sounds like the old "What comes around" thing to me. But I believe firmly in putting in 2nd and 3rd string and having them run just as if the game were 0-0, that's how you prepare for next year, or even injuries this year.

I've never understood the term "running up the score". I think all teams compete to win. If a team is fortunate enough to have such a lead, that means they've done their job. They've prepared well, and they've excecuted. It will go in cycles. Sometimes you're the team that hands a team a blow out, and other times, you're the team that gets blown out. EVERY team has their losses. Sometimes, they feel like humiliating losses. Yet if you recognize that you were beaten by a team that was better that day, then it's a noble loss. Well, that is if you take the lessons to be learned, and do just that. And I mean that not only do you work on your execution, but you learn to lose with grace. And frankly, Coach Matney doesn't seem to display that particular leadership skill. I hate that he wants to cancel with Boyle. And I am struggling to be objective about that particular nugget. He cancelled a return game with Louisville Central, and if I'm not mistaken, Johnson Central had WON the game the played when Louisville Central went to Johnson Central. What reasoning could he possibly have had to cancel? And what does it say to his team that he'd cancel with Boyle after losing to them? You aren't good enough to risk a game against them next year? You can't work on your execution and get better and beat them next year? I'm sure Coach Matney has his unwavering supporters. But from an outsider, despite the X's and O's and success of his program in terms of wins, he's failing miserably in the areas that it matters the most.

They learn how to handle situations in sport and life. In life if you come up short in a situation you can talk about and concentrate on what you need to do better or you can concentrate and talk about how life is unfair and it's someone elses fault.

So you either learn as a coach that you mis-judged your teams ability to play against this team or you failed to prepare them for this team. Either way you are responsible and need to set the example and "MAN-UP" instead of whining.

I find it interesting that Boyle County's second team was playing against Johnson Central's first team defense. I know several successful coaches who go by the credo "it's up to them to submit first. When they pull their starters, I'll pull mine."

 

I find the whole situation laughable, especially when the past scores appeared in the article. I'm not saying anyone ran up the score, either Friday or in the past. But for Matney to complain about it (publicly at least) is laughable at best.

 

I should have read this thread before posting in the Boyle vs. Rockcastle one. I’m laughing along with you on this one Scribe. In the Boyle game thread, someone made the comment “what goes around comes around”…Matney has been suspect on more than one occasion about padding a lead. I’m still very disappointed to hear that JC has backed out of this commitment to play Boyle again…(cluck-cluck)

You bring up a good point. JC chose to play in this game, which is much different than a top notched team putting touchdown after touchdown on the board against an undermanned district opponent in which neither team has any choice in scheduling.

Is this Matney guy for real. I read the article and am surprised that he would accuse another team of running up the score when all he did was beat down multiple teams over the years. I didn't see where any of those coaches were coming out and complaining about JC. What ever happened to Paintsville football team. I know they still exist but they use to have a pretty good football team. Let me guess, the guy from across town is stealing all the good players. Didn't this Matney dude use to coach over the mountain in Inez. What made him leave there? He is starting to act like another coach everyone likes to talk about somewhere down on Pine Mountain. I know everyone wants to be like "Mike" but come'on. Stop the complaining sir!!
