From everything that I have read, Boyle Co. did not run up the score.

Does anyone think Matney regrets what he said and will back off the "buy out"?

 

I really think he will (back off dropping Boyle Co.).

 

One can understand his -thinking- the score was run up immediately after the game. I believe he spoke his mind/feelings before he cooled off/calmed down. There's a SOLID history of his doing exactly that.

On a side note I was at the Breathitt Co. game and thought Holcomb did run the score up on Mercer Co. No reason to throw that ball to Fletcher at that point in the game. Throw it to someone else, ok, but not the best reciever on the team. Of course I guess it is better than running Fugate.

 

To win that game, it wasn't necessary. But, Breathitt County has a shot to win a state championship...to do that, they'll need the passing game to become more consistent and dangerous. Fletcher is a sophomore with a lot of potential. If I have the choice between getting some real playing time to build chemistry and confidence or hurting someones feelings by scoring an extra TD, I'll take the former.

 

Holcomb used to put his subs in and just hand the ball off and run out the clock. I hated that. That's a great chance for them to get some real varsity experience. You don't have to play aggressively like you're down 2 scores, but I would do a little more than running up the gut every time.

Because he wanted his offense to run their 2 minute offense and he knew his starters were all going to be sitting on the bench the second half (which they were). So Beechwood ran their 2 minute offense to perfection and passed their way to a score at the end of the half. The other team's coach was seriously PO'd but Beechwood needed the work on their 2 minute offense. Guess what? In the state championship game Beechwood used their 2 minute offense to score a TD just before the half and that was the difference in the game. Sometimes coaches have long term reasons for calling plays in a game. As many others have said, it is up to the opposing team to stop them and learn from it if they don't.

I wasn't at the game and do not know any details of the game.

 

There is no such thing as running up the score. Losing by one point in overtime or losing by 50 points are both losses in the record book.......neither one hurts more than the other.

 

I would disagree with you here. I would much rather lose bye 50 points than by 1! It is a loss either way but it would be easier to swallow knowing I had no chance at winning!

There may be some coaches out there who run up a score, I don't know, but Larry French ain't one of them. Dude would rather be fishing.

I would like to get some Johnson Central fans' take on this. I was not there so I can not say if it was "running it up." However I've known Rebel pretty much all my life and will take his word on it because he would have called it like it was.

 

I must say a 49-7 score is hardly running it up in this day and time.

 

The most glaring attempt to "not run up a score" that I ever saw was by Tom Duffy (one who was sometimes accused of "running it up."). Danville was playing Russell County in their perfect season of '84 and I believe it was something like 42 -0 just before half. Instead of punching one in from the one (they had to run another play), he had Keith Morgan take a knee. I'm not sure which would have been more embarassing. :thumb:

 

 

As I said in the game thread I have no problem with the way Boyle handled the game. Pretty much all the people I have talked to agreed. I think for the most part the Coach stands alone on this one. Of course I have only talked to a small amount of fans but we all pretty much agree. Im guessing this was just a moment where he spoke his mind before taking time to think about it. Has anyone heard him say anything else this week?
