Yes, but it's obvious that Jaggers isn't the coach the people of Mercer County wanted to have the kitchen sink, so to speak. They seem more inclined to hand that over to Buchanan.

I think Mercer has made it pretty clear they want coaches that are going to teach a full load without the opportunity to make extra money in a cake job like Jaggers had. If they weren't going to give that sink to Jaggers, I have a hard time believing they will give it to anyone else.

 

Sounds like Mercer has developed apathy towards athletics. Which isn't a shock because there are very few districts in Kentucky that aren't that way. It is also the reason the same handful of schools continue to show up in the state championship games.

 

No one said the "kitchen sink" had to include no teacher work load (which I thought was the main sticking problem with the Jaggars/Superintendent problem).

 

I think Buchanan still teaches and probably would if brought home to Mercer County. The idea of giving it to someone other than Jaggers is highly easy to believe in that it appears many bridges were burned between the various individuals involved.

Buchanon has created a pretty good situation at Mason Co. His system is in place, Mason pays pretty well, and I'm sure their adminstration works well with him. Other than the draw of coming back to a place he hasn't lived in 20 years, what would the draw of Mercer be over Mason? If Mercer isn't going to make his coaching situation better both from a teaching and financial standpoint I can't see him making that move.

Because even though he hasn't lived in Mercer County for 20 years as you say, it is still home. He has family that works in the Mercer County school system and he grew up with current AD Todd Davis. There are also rumors going around that he wanted the job when it was given to Jaggers. I really could see someone getting the job on an interim basis and then going after Buchanan next year when the timing is better for both Mercer County and David Buchanan.

 

Mercer County also offers the opportunity to play against Highlands every year in the playoffs. While it may be easier to win state at Mason County, I think you really prove just how good of a coach you are by beating the best. I think the chance to play and aspire to beat teams the caliber of Highlands, Bowling Green, Cov. Catholic, Christian County, Johnson Central, etc is very enticing.

 

I don't know what they can offer him financially, but while I know payday is important, I doubt he would take that significant of a paycut by switching from Mason to Mercer County, but I don't know if that is the case. It is speculation on my part when it comes to financial packages.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Steve Stonebreaker apply for the job as well.

I like how people think that coaches get cupcake jobs. I don't think people understand the time coaches put in. I am not talking about x & o's either. I am talking about couseling, getting kids help in academics, tutoring, taking care of facitlities, getting assistant coaches organized, FINDNIG assistants to coach, scheduling, and so much more. People expect a coach to teach a full load, do the extra stuff, and win. Meanwhile the pay is not what you expect in KY. Very few coaches make 10 grand as a head coach but work almost 11 months out of the year.

We (KY) have had over 115 new head coaches in the last 3 years. Considering that we only have about 216 football playing schools, that is a very high number. I just don't think we give all the head coaches the help it takes to do their job. So if some schools have "cush" jobs for the head coach, good for them.

Also, David Buchanan would be a great hire for Mercer County.

I agree with many of the other posters on here. I think Mercer's best bet is an interim at this point and then at the end of the season go after the coach they want. Whoever gets the job, permanently, is going to need community support as well as school support. Things like that need to be taken in to consideration when making a hire.

I have zero idea if Coach Buchanon is interested in the job, but what I do know is that he is a first class gentleman and a first class coach. I can easily see why Mercer would want him and why Mason wouldn't want to lose him.

I spoke to Dennis back in the spring and he said that he was coaching at a middle school in Lexington, I believe. Not for sure if he is teaching or not.

Dennis and his father are class acts that the Mercer school system needs not only in coaching but administration as well. Doubt that this will happen, though.
