Alvis Johnson? LOL!

 

When people say he is a good coach it makes me laugh. Some of you people know nothing about coaching. He couldn't win a state title with a college team playing in class A. He wouldn't have ever won a game if he had to play with athletes equal to everyone else's.:lol:

 

:confused:That can be said about every program in the state. Not all schools have talent at the level of others.

I've never been a huge fan of Alvis either but I don't know if I would go that far. (My reasons have more to do with a certain game in '77)

 

I do know that for years the problem was that Harrodsburg had outstanding talent but never could find a way to take advantage of that in the playoffs.

 

He certainly sent a large number of kids on to school: Henry Parks, Venus Meaux, Gus Parks, Nicky Yeast, Craig yeast, Dennis Johnson, Donald Smith, et al.

Who is Scott Bugg? Where does he coach now?

 

He's a teacher already in the Mercer Co system, he was offensive cordinater for Harrodsburg High School. He's a good person, good teacher , and a good coach!

That's a perception and I think its a bad one. Coach's can teach and coach, especially experienced ones who have taught for a while. I know old coach Jaggs taught health and pe the whole time he was coaching, Mueller is the chair of the science department at Highlands, if I’m not mistaken, and it doesn’t seem to bother him much! Saying you can't do both effectively is BS. I don't think that is an indication of how serious a football program is about winning, there’s a whole lot more to it than that. After all the purpose of every school's existence is to teach kids, not play football - sorry.:scared:

 

Sure you can do both effectively. However, I'm willing to bet that both of those you just mentioned taught the same class. Teaching 1, heck, even 2 different content specific classes a few times a day is a cakewalk.

 

I'm willing to bet that both of those did and/or do only teach one specific class, a few periods of the day.

 

Jaggers, according to well informed sources, was being asked to teach 3 different subject classes, in a 5 period day, and only 1 planning period. Not very doable, that is, if you're wanting that teacher to make the most out of his/her class(es). Now, do that or retire with full benefits? I know what I'll do one day! :dancingpa

Also, I just found out some info that I am completely shocked to hear!!

 

The Band Director at Mercer, next year, will be paid $3,000 more and have 10 more extended days than the next head football coach, and current boys basketball coach.

 

Now, I'm not saying the Band Director get paid less, but I have never in my entire life heard of this. Weird thing is, can anybody name me a high school out there that has a marching band, that doesn't have a football team?

 

Sounds to me like the powers to be, whomever they are calling the shots in these matters at Mercer, has everything completely mixed up.

Yates is for the band and hates players of sports.This man is weak.He uses his job to get even with jocks .The band will be number 1 and jocks will be last.

That is what it sounds like to me.

Sources say the committee will be interviewing this week and hope to make a hire within the next 2 weeks. There has been quite a bit of interest. From what I hear most applicants are young head coaches... maybe a couple years of head coaching experience. Not sure about this Scott Co coach. As far as Buchanan goes, it has been said that has declined the job because he will not leave his Royals this late in the summer.

I think people are jumping the gun on Yates and the whole "hates jocks" thing, but I guess we'll see. I think he has Mercer's best interests in hand and will do what he can to get the best possible coach he can get. The timing is awful so that hurts more than anything else when it comes to finding a "great, elite" coach. All these other posts about the band and having to teach are garbage and poor excuses, IMO. I have a hard time believing that a quality, capable coach will not want the job because they are being asked to teach. I think the timing hurts worse than anything else.

 

And for arguments sake, if all "the best coaches" don't want the Mercer job because they have to teach or because they make less than the band director, then a young upstart coach is the best direction to go because they will be hungry and will be walking into a great situation at Mercer County if they have the right attitude.

The band statements, I haven't heard different, from anybody. Apparently, they rule things at Mercer.

 

Secondly "having to teach" is a broad area. The good set up? Teaching ONE class throughout the day. The bad set up? Teaching multiple classes (different subjects/content) throughout the day.

 

Have a hard time believing it, fact of the matter is, the teaching schedule for the next coach will come into play. Might it be a full load of classes, maybe so? Chances are though, the new coach will be teaching the same class load as their previous job. They aren't going to find one who is either A) Done with teaching by 1:00 or B) Teaching a full load, of the SAME class at their previous school (yes, theres a lot out there that have this schedule). Some of you out there can choose to live in 'Never-Never Land' all you want.

Purple- quit talking to the people out at Corning and ask the coaches at the school what they think of the principal.Ask the b-ball coaches or the baseball coaches.Do you really think that French or Harp would teach a full load?French has been retired at least 3 years and Harp hasn't taught a class at Danville in the last 10 years.
