Mercer County's Next Coach

Purple- quit talking to the people out at Corning and ask the coaches at the school what they think of the principal.Ask the b-ball coaches or the baseball coaches.Do you really think that French or Harp would teach a full load?French has been retired at least 3 years and Harp hasn't taught a class at Danville in the last 10 years.

Next time I see Coach Tatum, I'll be sure to ask him.:thumb:

I don't know what French or Harp would do, but it's not about them and what they would do, it's about Mercer's successor and what will be expected of the next coach. I guess I am just an eternal optimist who believes that the person who takes the job has a better chance to succeed at Mercer than some seem to think. Who ever takes the job will know exactly what they are getting into. That's why I think a young coach may be the way to go if they don't go the interim route and go after Buchanan next year.

The band statements, I haven't heard different, from anybody. Apparently, they rule things at Mercer.

Secondly "having to teach" is a broad area. The good set up? Teaching ONE class throughout the day. The bad set up? Teaching multiple classes (different subjects/content) throughout the day.

Have a hard time believing it, fact of the matter is, the teaching schedule for the next coach will come into play. Might it be a full load of classes, maybe so? Chances are though, the new coach will be teaching the same class load as their previous job. They aren't going to find one who is either A) Done with teaching by 1:00 or B) Teaching a full load, of the SAME class at their previous school (yes, theres a lot out there that have this schedule). Some of you out there can choose to live in 'Never-Never Land' all you want.

The question I have is this. The coaches applying know they have to teach in order to be the head coach, right? Then in order to teach subjects they have to be qualified to teach that subject, right? So if you know you are going to have to teach the subjects that you are qualified to teach and coach as well, why is it such an issue? You make it seem as if they won't get a coach because they are asking him to be a teacher and I just don't see that being the case. Whoever takes the job will know what is expected and if it plays into the decision, so be it. It may not be a big name coach with a proven track record who is retired and doesn't have to teach, but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad hire.

Also, hasn't the band won state titles in band? I could be wrong, but they do have a good band at Mercer so a little back rubbing for the band is understandable. Just because it isn't the football team doesn't meant they should be ignored or that the band director shouldn't be rewarded.

Isn't there a fairly new sports complex that houses the football team? I could have sworn I had been in one. It was really nice, had a small turf field installed inside and weights on the 2nd level. Nicest sports complex(football fieldhouse) in the area last I saw. That is at Mercer isn't it?

Yes, it's a nice complex, now the field/stadium is a different story - definately needs work, but that indoor complex is first class.

2 State Titles.

As a parent of both a band student and a football student I can tell you that there is no over the top support for the band that folks are suggesting.

The band boosters work just as hard (probably harder) than any sports boosters.

The supt. that just retired built that. The principal had nothing to do with it.While your asking coaches ask Souder the girls coach or Shope the baseball coach or Cundiff the boys b-ball coach.the band did win state but do you know who they beat and what was the score? how much gate receipt money did they bring into the school district?

You act as if the new principal is going to tear it down or close it to the football team or something.

I know Tatum a little bit, but I don't know Souder all that well or the baseball or basketball coach at all so I wouldn't expect those 3 to give me an honest answer anyways.

No, I don't know who they beat or what the score was. My son goes to Boyle County and the kids whose parents worked at Corning have graduated so I am not so in touch with the Mercer bands success. If I am not mistaken, the band won state the same year the football team, is that correct?

Just because I don't follow the band or because the band doesn't receive the acclaim of football doesn't make it any less important of a school activity than football. A lot of people put in a lot of work to make everything at the high school level a success for the kids involved in it. I know a lot of people that come to football games strictly to watch their kids play at halftime in the band and then leave, but their gate receipts will go to the football team. Is that fair to them or the band? I think we all know who brings in more gate receipt money, but again that doesn't make one less important than the other. I don't understand your logic in that particular question.

That is nowhere near what I'm saying, not being a smart alec here, but you just have to be one (teacher) to know what I'm talking about.

It's the teaching load throughout the day. Again, teaching ONE subject throughout the day, nothing hard about that at all, actually, it's fun. However, having to teach multiple subject classes in the day is VERY tough, to be honest, it's not even really fair to the kids.

Think about it, using the current 'block' schedule that most schools have or some form of it (4-5 class periods a day, lasting and hour to hour and a half). Which would be best for the teacher and most importantly the students? Teaching 3-4 periods of Algebra 1 w/ ONE planning period OR teaching 3-4 periods of Algebra 1, Geometry and Business Math with ONE planning period? Both are doable, you're correct, but one situation is great and the other situation, for the lack of other words, stinks.

As I said, it takes being a teacher to know what I'm talking about. I realize that there are some on here who will try to put on their Captain America persona, and act they can do it all and have no worries, when they really do, but just won't be honest about how they really feel.

I see. With me not being a teacher, it'll be hard for me to understand all that goes into teaching, coaching, etc. I haven't got the slightest clue so I won't try to pretend like I know. It would take me being in that situation to completely understand that and I can say without a doubt, I'll never be a teacher or a high school coach so from an outsider's point of view, I hope Mercer can find the right person for the job.

Now, there is something I can say we definately agree on! :thumb:

I hear from a reliable source that Mercer contacted Shadon Brown and he will be interviewing this week, and he is interested. He is currently head coach at Rowan County. He also was an assistant at Boyle County in the past. This would put him a lot closer to home.

1 year as an asst. at Boyle and 1 year as head coach at Rowan. I believe he has a kid or 2 that live in Danville.

Sources say the committee will be interviewing this week and hope to make a hire within the next 2 weeks. There has been quite a bit of interest. From what I hear most applicants are young head coaches... maybe a couple years of head coaching experience. Not sure about this Scott Co coach. As far as Buchanan goes, it has been said that has declined the job because he will not leave his Royals this late in the summer.

I think the guy you are referring to is Dave Thomas. He has been the D Coordinator at Scott Co for the past 2 years. He is from Tenn where he coached at Riverdale where they went to the state championship 3 or 4 times and won at least one. He has head coaching experience.

Not big on spreading rumors, b/c I have no idea whether or not Coach Brown has applied or not, none of my business. But, he also had a few year stint at Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) as a Grad Assistant and coached the LB's there his last couple years. A great player who has also turned into a great young coach.

Obviously there are many posters on here that have alot of good things to say about Shadon Brown. I too have heard good things. My only concern is his lack of head coaching experience. This doesn't mean I don't think he can do the job, but I do think it will be alot harder on him, or any young inexperienced coach, walking in to the head job of the Mercer County Titans. 1 or 2 years of experience doesn't deem a coach 'seasoned' IMO. And I think they need a much experienced, 'seasoned' coach. But, that also doesn't mean they won't do a great job. Other than having to be an excellent football coach, the next guy is going to have to build back some bridges, build trust among staff and other coaches and learn to play nice with others. :D

I will say I've heard folks in the community talk about Buchanan and how the fact that he won't leave his Mason Co. team this late says alot about him. Sources say he did decline the job since it is so late in the summer and people talk about how this shows what a class act Buchanan is and how he cares about his players.

Good luck to the Titans in their search for a coach. Go get a good one!! :thumb:

Scott County is currently accepting applications for DC.
