Only after he had accepted the job, then found out that the Dunbar principal that had hired him, wasn't going to be at Dunbar and had taken another job himself.

Unfortunately, this type of thing happens when people are rushed into making big decisions like this. The blame lies with Jaggers for putting Mercer in this situation.

 

What about the Board of Education at Mercer for waiting 6 months to make a hire at Superintendent, puting Jaggers and the kids in limbo, waiting to know whether or not he could retire from teaching, yet still coach?

 

What about Terry Yates, the principal, for not letting Jaggers do what so many other coaches across the state have been able to do here lately (retire from teaching, but coach)?

 

What about Yates and the hiring committe for not hiring the obvious and best choice in the first place, Bill Mason? Jaggers Defensive Coordinator/'Right Hand Man' the past three years with, whom the kids, from everything I've heard, have a great respect for.

 

The fault here lies with certain members at the top of the mountain.

I didn't know sharing my opinion and other logical scenarios that might have contributed in all of this going bad at Mercer means I'm "biased" and "knowing too much."

 

Unlike some people on this site, I don't share opinions on matters I know nothing about.

The only sad part about the whole situation is that the Mercer team is without a captain. I thought Mason was the best choice for numerous reasons to start with but when they chose Weaver I thought OK they went in a different direction lets rally behind the program. Well after Weaver leaves you kind of suspect that Mason would get the offer but apparently they offer it to Brown.

 

I honestly think that Yates will not offer it to Mason at any point because he feels that is what the kids and the staff want and that would in some way make him feel that he gave in to their wishes. Mason knows how to run a program and can rally the players and coaches in time to begin practice, but it appears that Yates is dead set on bringing in an outsider.

 

We shall see, surely they wouldn't offer it to Brown and not know whether he would take it or not. So is it a given that Brown will accept the job?

Bottom line the kids at Mercer County deserve better. It is a shame we are 20 days away from the start of the season and they have not coach.

I doubt Billy would take the job if they offered it to him....especially now. But I guess it's Shadon Brown's job if he accepts (and doens't change his mind if he does take it). The only real people this hurts in this situation is the players. Good luck to Mercer County...I hope they get what they are looking for.

What type of spring practice has Mercer utilized the last two years while they were a 5 A program.

 

Does anyone know how many times Jaggers graced the doors of the weightroom this last spring?

 

Did Jaggers embrace the school and community as they head football coach?

 

Was his personal behavior considered being a role model, or someone you would want your son to be like?

I don't think this is the place to be discussing a person's personal life. Everyone of us including myself have had ups and downs, and none of us are perfect and everything should be left at that.

 

I will only say it is easy to sit back and question what Jaggers was or was not doing and not have any idea of the working conditions that the principal puts every coach under. There is a reason there are disgruntled coaches, and if this entire hiring process doesn't exemplify that then I guess you will just never see the whole picture due to your dislike for the former head coach.

 

Apparently the hiring committee was put together but this has been a one man band and Yates has totally disregarded what his committee recommended.

 

Anyway maybe he will get it right this time but I really have issues hiring a coach who is willing to leave his program during the dead period. For the sake of the kids, I hope Mercer can get this one right.

 

How many of the assistants were at the meeting with Weaver? It is imperative for any incoming coach to have a solid staff, I was just wondering how receptive the staff was at his coaches meeting.

Does anyone have any information on Mason's plans? Is he looking to stay at Mercer?

At this point, Shadon Brown and the fact that he has ties to the area is the best choice for Mercer. I don't know him personally, but I feel pretty good about believing that he has no intentions of leaving the area anytime soon.

 

I don't have a dog in this fight, but from an outsider's point of view, because of all the things surrounding Jaggers, I think it was best for both Jaggers and the new administration to get a clean break. Whether or not it was right or wrong is irrelevant to me because there were fundamental issues that were not in sync for a relationship to be functional.

The blame lies with Yates for putting Mercer in this position!!

Wow... I go on vacation for a few days, come back and see that one day HC is named and next day HC leaves. This is nuts! Bad deal for the players and asst. coaches. Who in the heck is going to leave where they are now and come in during the 'dead period'? I know there may be a few, but this has turned in to a joke!!

 

Anybody know why Weaver left? Is Mason gonna get the offer now? And does he even still want it? I say give it to Bill and let him run with it. If things don't go in the right direction, then reeavaluate the sitation at the end of the season.
