This was a tough loss for my Cards, but this had to be the game of the year. The intensity level was so high and at one point the entire crowd, both sides, were up cheering as loud as they could. Another instant classic between these two powerhouses.

 

The turnovers hurt Scott late, but there was no doubt this game was gonna be won by whoever got the last shot off. I do disagree with the last foul call with 3 seconds left to put Catholic on the line to take the lead, unless there's a clear foul there the refs shouldn't decide the game. I would be interested for anyone who went to the game or watched it online to tell me what they thought about that call.

Wow what a great great game. Taylor Martin hit 2 game winning free throws with 3.8 seconds left.

 

I felt so bad for Richie Pharres. He grew up in the Scott County Program, unlike most of the rest of the team. He was their best player without a doubt. One of the best traditional big men to come out of KY in several years. He was just a bad matchup for most teams. And Pharres just got better and better as the season progressed. It is a shame to have an injury at such an inopportune time.

 

SC really missed their leader tonight. Gelawn had a big night with over 30. However, he made a really bad play with about 30 seconds to go. SC was holding the ball with a 1 point lead, trying to get LC to foul. Gelawn decides to drive the lane, and throws up a circus shot which had no chance of going in. Bad decision. LC gets the ball back. They hold it, and Taylor Martin puts up a shot with 3.8 and gets fouled. Hit both, and game over.

 

Manning for SC was in foul trouble throughout the night, which impacted SC. He will be a top national player in the years to come. A couple of times it looked like SC was getting ready to pull away. But LC would fight right back.

 

Vee Sanford has turned into a big time D1 prospect IMO. And he is a winner in big game situations. Martin, Schuette, Beckham, Botkin, and Pierratt all had big game for LC.

 

One of the best HS games I have seen in a long time, with so much on the line.

I was at the game but did not have the best angle. All I know is Martin was on the floor and the ball never reached the basket. We'll take the win any way we can get it

It was close on the foul call. Usually refs don't do that late. He was falling to the ground as he shot. Looked like a foul, but hard to say.

I was there and I agree, this game is easily an instant classic. I thought the Lincoln/McCreary game last night was the best game I had seen in a long time until tonight. This is easily the best game now....until next week.

 

Observations that I had from the game include......

 

Jaylen Beckham from LexCath truly amazed me. For a freshman to play with the moxie and swagger that he played with blew me away. His tip dunk and his Kevin Garnett howl after the dunk was memorable and I hope to see the highlight one day.

 

Vee Sanford is a player, he set the tone for Catholic throughout the game and played the way you want your best player to play in a game of that magnitude.

 

Guynn and Jackson are extremely great players. Once Guynn got going, I don't think he missed a shot, except for the last shot he took. Last I saw he had 31 I think. A little bit more maturity and growth and Scott County wins this game. I think Guynn shot too early at the end of the 2nd quarter which gave the ball back to Catholic and allowed them to take the lead going into the half, and he definitely shot it too early in the 4th to give Catholic the ball back with 20+ seconds. He is a great player and I guarantee when he is in that situation again, he won't shoot it. Scott County will build off of this and come back strong next year.

 

Tamron Manning's 3 fouls in the 1st and his 4th with 6:50 left in the 3rd hurt Scott County I think also. With Manning not in foul trouble, this is a much different ball game.

 

How come in March, Scott County doesn't have an efficient press offense? I taught my 3rd and 4th grade team 2 good press break plays and they ran them whenever we got pressed. How come Jackson or Guynn was left continually by themselves to break the press? They turned the ball over so many times, but I couldn't help but wonder why they weren't running some kind of a press offense. The were easily more athletic than Catholic, but I don't care how athletic you are, 1 man isn't going to beat 3 when they press like they do at Catholic.

 

I thought LexCath wanted it more. I thought the kid got fouled, but there was 3.8 on the clock and Scott County turned it over so it's not like they didn't have a chance to get a last second shot. We all saw Jackson cover half the court for a layup at the end of the 1st in 2 seconds so the ability to get a good shot at the end was there. One more timeout would have gone a long way.

 

I think Scott County is a much better team than they showed tonight and for as bad as I thought they played, the fact that they still had a chance to win says a lot to their ability and also to LexCath for doing what it takes to win.

 

Great game and I am glad I was there. I'll never forget it.

I agree ... with Phares out for Scott County, this isn't that big of an upset, maybe not one at all.

 

Still, I don't think the Cardinals will get all that much sympathy.
