Certainly isn't the first time Hicks has put a loss on the stripes.

Actually, Vince Taylor is the guy I was asking about ... the guy that went to Duke.

 

I've talked with his dad before, not anti kentucky necessarily, but I got the impression Kentucky wasn't huge on their radar or that they had seriously considered it at the time. I think Vince is at Missori State nowdays? He was with Tubby last year I know for sure at Minnesota.

Based on my opinion of the game and the statement about Salsman outcoaching Hicks. I'd say a lot has to do with the press. I assumed Scott Co had better ballhandlers then they seemed to display at times. Yet they continually threw the ball away on the press. And I'm not even talking times where Catholic was playing a heavily pressured press but simply a slower trap press giving the Scott Co. players a little room. I'd have thought as some have mentioned in this thread Hicks could at some point have beaten the press with a gameplan, but he never seemed to make a change to the attack. Yet, Lex Cath has run this press for years ala Haney, and it still seems to confound teams on occassion so maybe its just that good.

I think I saw a 2 year old and under AAU team with Knights on the jerseys running that 2-2-1 press. Salsman does a great job, but the kids grow up perfecting that system of pressing.

Watched the game on TV (Insight Ch. 135 I think. WTVQ extra station)

 

No doubt it was a foul. Couldn't not call that one.

 

Watched the same thing, Catholic Grad, at time of play, I thought definite foul. Kid comes in, appears to be some contact, he goes down, throws up shot. Foul, good call.

 

We replayed it, Euton doesn't appear to make as much contact as it is Martin gets off balance making his drive, G-lawn seems to block the shot, maybe drawing some wrist contact.

 

Still, key here is the initial view, totally looked like a foul from our angle. Not given a replay, I'd say many people would be forced to call it.

 

Other key point, speculation doesn't matter, foul was called, shots were made, game is logged in record books as an LCHS win.

Hahaha, I will admit at Mary Queen here in town we all knew the basics of the press pretty well. I'm sure Christ the King, Saint Peter and Paul, etc. all had similar plays.

Scott Co's 2 year old and under AAU teams work on the run and jump, but this year the make-up of the team was a little different so not all the kids playing had the background.

Lex. Cath. starts their middle school programs running that press and their transition offense. Other than that, I think a big impact on LC's year has been moving big Mendy sitting beside Salsman.

 

As far as the foul. Great job by Martin stepping up and draining the foul shots. They shouldn't have had the ball, but Scott County took an ill-advised shot at the other end.

 

Most of the rest of our teams would LOVE to get the obvious foul called at that juncture of a game, but how often does that really happen?

This was a tough loss for my Cards, but this had to be the game of the year. The intensity level was so high and at one point the entire crowd, both sides, were up cheering as loud as they could. Another instant classic between these two powerhouses.

 

The turnovers hurt Scott late, but there was no doubt this game was gonna be won by whoever got the last shot off. I do disagree with the last foul call with 3 seconds left to put Catholic on the line to take the lead, unless there's a clear foul there the refs shouldn't decide the game. I would be interested for anyone who went to the game or watched it online to tell me what they thought about that call.

I didn't see the game but I really don't agree with this logic just because it is inside 10 seconds. If it was a foul it should have been called. Take the FC/ Lafayette game, Vance Hall was clearly hit in the middle of the forearm and fouled inside 10 seconds (wazoo replay shows this). No whistle was blown. That's basketball, I understand that, I just don't agree with no calls inside of 10 seconds.

The thing about it is... If Coach Hicks is going to fuss about the call then why isn't he taking responsibility for his kid taking a TERRIBLE shot?? Shouldn't he be coached up about what shot they wanted? I've seen Coach Hicks fuss at ref's before. Nothing new. Do you actually think he assigner is going to put a lot of stock in that? Out of the 14 teams that lost last night I'm sure 6-8 weren't happy at all. It's alway that way so to put the blame on an official that makes the obvious call is sort of an easy way out IMO!

 

By the way.... One of the Scott County players parents took the 2nd place trophy and sit it next to the ref's changing room? What's THAT all about? I'm thinking that if you learn how to handle the press and not turn it over and over and over than you have the OTHER trophy.

Like I've said in the past, Billy Hicks is very gracious as a coach, as long as he's winning. When he beat LexCath earlier in te year, he had nothing but high praise for the Knights. By the way, has Scott County and Lexington Catholic ever played a game in which Hicks has not gotten a technical foul?

My question is this. Why would Guyn want to shoot the ball and Scott County with a 1 point lead? To me that was just idiotic! Make them foul you and put you on the stripe.

It was a GREAT foul call, how can you not call that a foul? It was a no brainer! The referee that called that foul is the BEST referee in the state this year and I'm sure he didn't care who won or who was coaching or what player got fouled or who the foul was called on or how much time was on the clock. If you see a foul, CALL it!
