SC should have won, even without Phares. I still can't understand shooting a bad shot with 30 seconds to go.

 

Vee is just a winner in crunch time. Beckham will be a great player for Catholic. If he can get an outside jumper and work on free throws, watch out.

 

So much talent in the 11th, especially fresh/soph.

 

Next year, SC will still be the favorite to win the 11th and probably the state. But without Phares, they are a different team.

 

LC will be very tough again, but loosing Vee and Botkin will hurt. But Martin, Beckham, and Schutte will be key players.

 

Henry Clay was playing well at the end, and took Catholic to the wire without their best player (Prince Stewart). Wilder, Keisling, and Kimbell will be their young stars.

 

Also in the 11th, Tates Creek should be tough with Barksdale and Fucci. 2 great sophs.

 

Lafayette made a nice run late and will be better next year.

 

And the list goes on and on. It's a shame only 1 team from the 11th gets to the state.

So correct. Take Kobe off the Lakers and they are an average team. Sorry it had to end this way for Scott Co.

 

Disagree, the Lakers would still make the playoffs. Just like Scott County would've still won if they had any type of press breaker, or Ge-Lawn didn't take a contested baseline hook shot with 25 seconds and a 1 point lead. Scott County had 4 players on their end of the half court line and one player, usually Jackson, try to dribble through the press himself or throw a full court pass against it. Sounds like a great press breaker to me :idunno: . I really don't understand how the coaches do not at least put someone in the middle or let two people try to dribble through it instead of one. Scott County's FG % had to be ridiculous, especially in the second half. If everything they threw up didn't go in, it would've been a 15 point game. Guyn was on fire from three (hitting contested threes multiple times) and I think he is hardly above 30% on the year if that. Jackson, I think, was 2-2 from three and I'm pretty sure his last lable would be a shooter. Great win by Catholic and Vee Sanford is a player. His floater is the prettiest I've seen, and that is a very hard shot to master. Taylor Botkin also had a monster tournament, and clutch free throws by the youngster Martin. Jaylen Beckham has got to be the best 6th man in the state.

 

Scott County is like the Lakers in that they still are top 5-10 without Phares, and top 5 without Phares but add a game plan.

 

Take Lebron away from the Cavs and they are below average :thumb: !!

You can make arguments on both sides about the refs. There were questionable calls throughout the game. I thought the refs were consistent. If Scott County would have played just a little bit better, and work on a press offense, they would have won by double digits, but you have to execute, especially in March, and Scott County did not execute well at all, and it cost them a chance to keep playing, IMO.

Yes you do. A foul is a foul and that was obviously a foul. I don't understand how you can say that. Don't call a foul with little contact on a half court heave at the last second (Mason vs. Clark regular season) but definitely call a foul on a shot at the rim with obvious contact. If you don't call a foul the team shooting has no chance because you can just tackle him right? :banana:

I watched SC all season. IMO, they never really meshed as a team. With all the transfers, it was difficult to come together as "one". SC has a lot of superstars, but not sure they played well together. They just had enough depth and firepower to overwhelm most in the state. If one star was off, there were 2 others to get 25 each. Most teams don't have that luxury.

 

And this shows just how important Richie Phares was for the team. He was their leader. Will be interesting to see if SC develops a true floor leader next year. Maybe Jackson or Manning or Ivey? I just don't see Gelawn being the floor leader. He seems to be more interested in his own stats.

I do disagree with the last foul call with 3 seconds left to put Catholic on the line to take the lead, unless there's a clear foul there the refs shouldn't decide the game. I would be interested for anyone who went to the game or watched it online to tell me what they thought about that call.

 

It shouldn't matter if there are 32 minutes or 0.1 seconds left in the game if the ref thought it was a foul it is his or her place to make the call.

You also have to contest that shot if you are on defense whether you foul him or not. No way you let him get that good of a look that close to the goal. Without contact he makes that shot easy. He had already made that same shot over Euton earlier.

Off topic, is the Boys State Tournament bracket up anywhere yet with all the teams?

Not knowing any of the finals stats and not to be too harsh because they are just young players, I am not at all surprised that no post has even mentioned Euton. When the Euton/Jackson transfer happened, I believed in the hype (probably like most BGPer's and KY high school basketball followers) that they, mainly Euton, would turn Scott Co. into a lock for the State Championship. But after watching a couple games of Scott Co vs. region winners, Euton was very unimpressive (and I know a player can have bad games). I won't criticize him anymore, but I will ask Billy G. and UK...what were/are you thinking???

Scott County was in the driver's seat without their most important player in my opinion. The baseline jump hook was a poor decision and not what the situation called for, but these are high school kids and the kid who took that shot, played his heart out in an outstanding effort.

 

While I do not always like a wild game like this one, I did find it very entertaining.

I absolutely hate when people say you should swallow the whistle at the end. That is an unfair advantage to the defense. In the rules it states what a foul is and says nothing about when in the game it is or isn't a foul. IT ALWAYS IS. I know of refs swallowing the whistle to end a teams season and it isn't right. This was the right call because there was contact on the arm and with the body. Unwritten rules ruin basketball!!! Just like the unwritten rule of traveling/extra steps in the NBA hurts it.

I find your comments interesting. I saw Scott County on tv against LexChristian and I was impressed, but tonight, not so much. I expected a lot more, but I agree, they didn't seem to play as a team. They are loaded with talent and it seems to me that they should be 10-20 points better than most teams in the state. I really thought they would be better, or even better prepared. They looked lost to me and I guess not having Phares hurt them in so many different ways. Like I said earlier, the fact that they played so badly and still could have won let's you know they can be a great great team. All the credit to LexCath, they played great tonight. I can't say that enough.

I saw Euton and Jackson several times last year at Rose Hill and 5-6 times this season at SC.

 

I kind of agree, that I am not overly impressed by either player. Jackson definitely made more progress than Euton over the course of the season. Euton seems to have peaked about a year ago.

 

Worries me about Euton's prospects at UK. He is basically a spot up (when open) shooter. If we can't get Meeks an open look, I don't see how Euton is getting those open looks in the SEC.
