Voice of Reason
I couldn't get the story link above to open so I don't know if the story mentioned ash becoming hard to find. With the borer ash attacking ash trees, ash is becoming more difficult to find. I think that is one of the reasons they started using some maple bats. BB#21
I think they should use bambo bats IMO.
Jim Schue
Another narrow miss. Won't be long and some fan's gonna get impaled in the neck or chest by one of these. Tyler Colvin injured by broken bat The portion of the bat hit him in the upper right side of the chest. It punctured but did not stick in his chest. Doctors are taking X-rays on Colvin's chest, and there's a suture on the wound. The team said there was minimal external bleeding. Colvin was being treated with a chest tube to prevent a collapsed lung. "It's scary, that's the danger of a maple bat," Cubs infielder Jeff Baker said. "Thank goodness he's OK." threetimelover
You can watch the video here -- http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100919&content_id=14847072&vkey=news_chc&c_id=chc I know the Cubs don't have many games left, but he is finished for the rest of the year. What if it had hit him in the face? MLB has to address this problem.

What if it had hit him in the face? MLB has to address this problem. He's lucky the bat was at the angle it was pointing (upward), which deflected some of the piercing ability of it. Had that bat planed out or was pointing slightly downward, Colvin's facing years of surgery if he's fortunate enough to survive.

Colonels_Wear_Blue
The whole maple bat thing does nothing but get me angry. It's a danger to everyone, players, coaches, fans, and officials alike, within a 100'+ radius of the plate. The near misses and injuries are piling up, yet MLB does nothing. You know, even in rugby, with as little equipment as they have, the International Rugby Board does what it can to make equipment safer. They have strict guidelines about cleats in order to minimize the risk for player injury. Seriously MLB? You guys are ridiculous.
