Officiating basketball has to be the hardest job---much tougher than football, baseball, softball ect. You can't call every little touch or bump. I think the good officials work a philosophy of "advantage/ disadvantage". I know the 8th and the 9th regions are much better than it used to be years ago. They all try to do a good job but at times it is difficult. The key is being consistant in both halves and from game to game.

 

If anyone out there wants to give it a shot, I am pretty sure the KHSAA would help you get started.

 

Some of the best I have seen are Ernie Ligon, Steve Kellam, Terry Coldiron, Dave Watkins, Brian Sandlin, Sean Knollman just to name a few.

I also like Karen Cooper and Cornbread out of the 8th Region.

I think Tim Ohara is a good official, and he is in the 9th.

 

I haven't seen all of them. I thought Pouncey (?) at the Highlands, CovCath game did a good job. Unfotunately the other two, especially the tall Blonde guy drug him down.

16th is top heavy IMO...the veteran's and more experienced are the best over the course of the season.

 

Davin Barnett has had rave reviews as being a top notch young official from the reps in the Ashland/Boyd/Greenup area. Hopefully he will stay with it over the course of time and quickly move up the ladder.

We can't forget Lonnie Brumfield in the 16th. Very Consistent.

Mike Alderman is "The Best" official in the 16th by a landslide! IMO! I haven't saw him this season hope he hasn't quit!! He calls the whole game the same way uninfluenced by

players, fans, importance of game, coaches as he's passing their bench, time on clock, etc., etc., etc.

In the 12th, I've always liked Jimmy Dyehouse, Scott Bottoms and Mark Bryant. Dyehouse and Bottoms are doing more college now, but when they are in the gym, you usually get a well-called game.

O'Hara IMO is the best the ninth has to offer. Jon Campbell does very well too most of the time.

 

Call me crazy but I don't think Poucy does a great job. Not gonna go into detail, and I don't think he is the worst in the region, I just don't think he is the best either.

 

For the record I have been to a lot of games in the ninth this season and probably the best, most consistant I have seen was done by Campbell and Lohr as far as 2 man goes... I haven't seen a ton of 3 man...

I remember him in the late 80's, very professional and takes it very seriously. I saw where Charlie Chappie got inducted into the NKY sports HOF.

Ugh, being from the 16th i'll vote none. All seem to be a little biased, some for my team (so i cant complain completely). The best ref in the region would be different for nearly every team in the state. In trying not to get my license revoked from BGP, all i will say is our fans cringe when we see Joe Billman, Carl Wayne McGlone or Timmy Sublett, even though i'm sure some teams would vote them as top notch for whatever reason. But, there are other refs we do like to see at our games. I will say that I think Kenny Johnson(does he still ref?) is a little underrated in BASKETBALL, and for some reason i really like Paul Lewis (havent seen him this year either though). Bobby Hall usually does a pretty good job. As Nets mentioned, Davin Barnett is on his way towards being a top notch official, imo.

Overall though, I do have respect for these men and women who do officiate. I couldn't think of a worse job. You get done with you 9-5 job, then you hustle to various parts of your area to be insulted and yelled at by players, coaches and fans, EVERY NIGHT. I guess sometimes we forget that the refs are people too, and maybe we wouldn't like it if they came to our jobs or classrooms and criticized every move we made. Honestly, i dont think refs are biased, for the most part, i believe that we give them that reputation based on one or two games, and then every call they make is under a microscope.

The Bluegrass Basketball Association has several good officials. They work both the 10th and 11th regions so it is hard to narrow to just one region.
