For those people in the area, would you prefer the 8th, 9th, or 10th region officials?

 

I think hands down when you ask the coaches and AD's in the 10th whether they want to switch officials come postseason time, they will tell you a resounding no. Unless it is with the 11th.

 

The reason why is that the Bluegrass Association mentioned above supplies the officials for the 10th and the 11th.

 

In fact, had a conversation with a NKY AD that is a 10th region team. He was at a NKAC meeting where they were discussing switching officials for the 9th region postseason. He told them great idea cause their officials are terrible unless they want to come and ask to switch with the 10th. He said absolutely not, in switching.

 

Playing in the 10th and the NKAC he is well viewed in the officials of both and said it is not even close.

 

I too agree that Rick Chasteen and the Bluegrass Association is the best officials in the state.

Officiating basketball has to be the hardest job---much tougher than football, baseball, softball ect. You can't call every little touch or bump. I think the good officials work a philosophy of "advantage/ disadvantage". I know the 8th and the 9th regions are much better than it used to be years ago. They all try to do a good job but at times it is difficult. The key is being consistant in both halves and from game to game.

 

If anyone out there wants to give it a shot, I am pretty sure the KHSAA would help you get started.

 

Some of the best I have seen are Ernie Ligon, Steve Kellam, Terry Coldiron, Dave Watkins, Brian Sandlin, Sean Knollman just to name a few.

 

I would have to disagree with you about Brian Sandlin. I don't care how many big games he gets to do. He seems to think we all came to see him call the game and you better believe he will make 1 or 2 calls at the end of the game that always seem to have a major influence on the outcome of the game. He's got "Rabbit Ears" and listens to everything that coaches say to him and to fans in the stands. I once saw him stop the game and go over and try to explain a call to a parent. Very thinned skinned and he is constantly trying to bait coaches into an arguement. I think he got ran out of the 9th Region didn't he?

I do agree with you on Coldiron and Kellam. Both are very consistent IMO

I think Jon Campbell in the 9th and I think Pouncy does a good job. Hated to see Rob Allen give it up thought he was one of the best in the 9th if not the best.

 

Pouncey has become an excellent ref IMO and you are correct in your assessment of Rob Allen. He was as good as they get in the 9th.

Jon Campbell- He is doing some D3 college games now so he doesn't have as much time for HS Basketball. Still the best in my opinion.

 

Dan Sheilds- Very good with the coaches and players. He lets you talk, as long as your not being smart with him.

 

Dave Canaract-Style very much like Sheilds. He lets you ask questions from what I can tell and knows the game well.

 

As for Tim O'Hara, when I played I thought he was one of the best ones, but I really haven't been impressed with him over the past few years.

 

I will agree with you on Campbell and O'Hara and strongly disagree with you on Shields and Kanerak.

Jason Reineke is a good young offical in the 9th. I also like Tim Reed. You have to throw Charlie Chapie in there. Jenny Mertle has to be one of the worst. Dan Shields does to much to draw attention to himself in my opinion.

The Bluegrass Basketball Association has several good officials. They work both the 10th and 11th regions so it is hard to narrow to just one region.

When I have seen him Lonnie do games in the past he has been fair on both ends of the court.

 

 

You cant say that for alot of Ref's around the 15th and 16th.

I havent seen many good ones around either Region. It is a tough job but at least call it both ways on both ends. They will let you mug somebody down low and then call a hand check out front.

This I guess is my biggest gripe with the BGC officials; and I'm not prone to official-bashing as a general rule. They have a thankless job for the most part. What I see is a lot of rough stuff under the basket that goes unchecked; and yet a little hand check THAT DOES NOT RESULT IN AN ADVANTAGE FOR THE DEFENDER is routinely called. In fact, point guards get bumped and shoved all the way up the court with elbows, shoulders and hips, but as soon as that hand makes contact it's a foul.

I would have to add that IMO this is true.

Terry Coldiron is by far the best official in the 8th region. He is fair to every team and makes the right call almost everytime. Other officials in the 8th seem to favor some other teams at times, but I do realize that they are out there to make the right calls. All officials are trained and do overall a good job all over the state. Keep up the great work! :thumb:

You could name anybody from the 16th and others would be able to argue. To answer a question from a previous thread, Kenny Johnson was still officitating as of December and Paul Lewis had surgery (knee or foot?).

 

Yes Paul Lewis did have knee surgery but is recovering well. He reffed a Raceland boys game last week.

I agree that Marla Gearhart is a good official. Is Linda Strong still reffing?

I totally agree with you on Sandlin. He wants to be the center of attention. I do believe you are correct about him leaving the 9th Region. Knollman and Watkins are somewhat similar to Sandlin regarding "Rabbit Ears" and they are very unapproachable with table personnel. I do disagree with you on Kellam. I've seen games where he's baited and seems to have a major influence late in the game. Coldiron is by far the best ref in the 8th.
