Scooter Charles is the most underrated offical in the 16th region.

Add John "JT" Taylor to the list for GREAT officials in the 10th and 11th region! He works the game, loves being an official, he will talk to the coaches, he works the floor, he will speak to the players and coaches w/respect. He is as good as there is and is always in a Regional semi-finals or finals ever year! The thing about JT is that he refs an Augusta/Deming match-up just as hard as he would a Mason Co./Clark Co. match-up. I know for a fact that cannot be said about all BBA officials!

 

Cary Lyle, Bill Carmichael, John Chamberlain, Jon Devney, Kenny Catron--all from the BBA--are all guys that as a coach you can talk to and ask questions and they never get that "I am the ref and you need to sit down attitude".

Question: Does his seeing eye dog get inducted too?? :laugh:

I do know one thing, the officials who called the Rowan Co -Clark Co game really stunk it up.:ylsuper:

They missed a lot of shoving. I guess just letting them play.

Ashurst is pitiful...has the skills/knowledge but his arrogance makes him awful. Always favors Corbin also.

He called one of the most biased state tournament games I've ever seen in 1999 0r 2000 (not sure of the year) when he officiated the semifinal game between Scott County and Paducah Tilghman. It was pretty bad, and he made it so obvious. I really felt sorry for the Tilghman coach and his team. They deserved to win the game, but a series of horrendous calls (imo) late in the 4th period, nearly all that went against Tilghman an nearly all made by Ashurst, doomed the Tornado. There were around 18,000 in Rupp, and I'd safely say 15,000 of them stood and booed for 15 minutes after the game was over.

I talked to an official recently and he said if you called every foul that you see in a girls game you might foul everyone out and be there for 4 hours. Not sure how many fouls were called at this game but Girls games can be more difficult to call then boys.

What about the 13th? Do any of them qualify as good and who would be the best?:confused:

16th has several Kenny Clark, Tom Sparks, Dave Anderson, Steve Greenhill though is probably the best but we have several decent officials that call the game consistent and fair both ways!

Cary Lyle does do a good job and deserves a shot in Rupp.

 

Are you speaking of the same Cary Lyle who officiates football in the 16th Region? Works for the state at Greenbo Lake? If so, I wonder why he calls out of another area in basketball. If we're speaking of the same Cary Lyle then your compliments suit him well. He's an excellant football official who officiated the State Finals last year and while I haven't seen him call basketball, I can only assume that he's at the top level of that as well. Not only is he an excellant official but he's also a great association member who cares deeply for the future of officiating in this state. He's a tremendous asset and mentor to our football association. I have a ton of respect for the man.

Those 1st two are HORRIBLE and the other two are very average!

 

I just want to laugh when I read this. Those are 4 very good officials listed there. You know that you can always log onto the KHSAA website and register to officiate. I tell everyone this who criticizes the officials....If you don't like them, if you think you can do better, or you think they need to improve somehow then come on out! I'm sure the local associations would love to have a new official and then you can criticize if you want, I don't think you would anymore but you could if you wanted. Instead of sitting in the stands bashing the officials about 1 missed call, come out and do something about it. This thread was meant to give some officials a bit of credit, not to bash them and call them horrible.

 

Oh BTW, the first 2 officials listed (Kenny Clark and Tom Sparks) are 2 of the best officials in the 16th region, along with Steve Greenhill. The 3rd offical listed (Dave Anderson) is on his way to big things if he chooses. He's a great young official with a bright future in officiating. That comes from people who know just a bit more about officiating then you.

Since the 16th is suffering from a shortage and the varsity refs are also doing JV gan=mes, hall has gotten pretty bad; Marla Gearhart is the most consistent.

 

The number are going up in the 16th region.

There were 58 free throws taken during the game. That just seems to be a lot.

I was told by a moderator that it would be best not to do a "worst official". But I will agree with you, Sandlin seems to be very thin skinned. I believe he t-ed up coach Jones last year for looking at him wrong. He can and has called a good game, but a little touchy for my taste. David Watkins is another. Absolutely Horrible.

 

On the flip side, Ryan Morris does a nice job as well as Coldiron and add in Tim Hendricks too. Although he (Coldiron) can have a quick T trigger as well at times. Cornbread is a classic.

 

I will have to say that the games that I have seen in both 8th and 9th Regions this year, I give the nod to the 9th region folks. Tom Freppon and Jenny Mertle did a nice job at the Lloyd Tournament over the holidays. But the guys that did the Ludlow/Bellevue game last Thursday need some glasses.

 

Guess you'll never have the perfect situation and it is a hard job. No question. We can complain and compliment all we want, but until we put on the stripes.................

 

I actually forgot about Tim Hendricks. We don't see him much for our games, but he is a good official. I am just getting to know Ryan Morris and I think that he does a fine job also. I also think that Sabrina Eddlin is a nice official in the making.
