Well said! :thumb: Also, there are coaches who give lists to the assinging secretaries with the names of officials that are allowed to do their games. Wonder why you see the same group of officials at particular schools?

Then you would be getting back to the situation of "contracting" officials like they do in Indiana. I have friends that still officiate and they have contracts years ahead of times for certain schools and games.

Somone talked earlier about letting officials rate each other. That would be a hoot. Some people would lose friends if they are honest with people. I had to tell a guy once that he was in over his head and not to do a game (it was a preseason scrimmage). Hardest thing I ever had to do, but it did make my decision easier when I dedcided to hang it up. I knew it was time to go when the speed of the game had picked up and I no longer could get in position. Desire was still there, but the wheels were shot!

 

Some people never quite learn that however! There are a few D 1 guys out there that need to hang it up for that fact alone!

After reading through this post the other day, I decided to ask my friend who is very knowledgeable about officials in the 10th & 11th Regions. The association is called the Bluegrass Basketball Association (BBA).

 

The veterans and the best officials of the BBA who are always on the biggest games are Wade Branscum, Clayton Brooks, Ken Catron, John Chamberlain, Kirk Hudson, Bart Lenox, Larry Lewis, Cary Lyle, Bo Queen, Sherriane Shuey, J. T. Taylor, Eric Thornsbury, Jerry Thornsbury, Kevin Walter, Don Werner, Jack Whittemore, and Gary Wilson.

 

Some of the newer members, or younger officials, that were mentioned and are good and "up and coming officials" are Royce Blevins, Rod Bristow, Charlie Burke, Mark Johnston, Jim McMillin, Keith Morgan, Dustin Music, Ryan Sallee, Jeff Singleton, Terry Smith, and Jimmy Sparks.

 

My friend said that there are probably some names left out.

 

Mike Goins recently retired and is now the assistant assignor for the BBA. As someone previously stated, John Chamberlain isn't officiating this year.

I don't think evaluating by fellow officials would work at all. It's too much of a conflict of interest.

As I said it was my opinion.........I think I can make a strong case for it too. There is absolutely no conflict of interest for officials to evaluate other officials......I didnt say it would be done in a public forum either. I guarantee that if you give your local group of officials a list of their membership and ask them to pick out the top 10 among them you would end up with the same group of 10 from everyone.....maybe not in the same order but you would still get the cream.......If these guys are to be men of integrity when it comes to enforcing the rules of the game then surely they have enough integrity to offer an educated opinion when it come to evaluation of their fellow offical.

Also, can you tell me where Joe Billman is from? I am not sure if I know who you are talking about?

For your info GAL, I'm not someone rating officials from the stands. Ask an official who knows officiating before you start ranting. Coaching does not make you an expert on officiating. I'll tell you this though, you did not see Kenny Clark call a "T" on anyone at Russell 2 yrs ago because he hasn't called a JV game at Russell is probably 6 or 7 years and maybe longer than that. You may be getting him mixed up with someone else but I think if I was going to call someone out like you just did, I would at least make sure that I had the right person. About your rated higher rant, usually only 1 official makes in to the boys State Tourney each year from the NEKBOA. I guess with your theory, the other officials are horrible for not getting the call for the Sweet 16. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

 

I know for a FACT it was Kenny Clark, and the kid he T'd up was an 8th grader from WC. That is a fact. Ask Perry Yates. The ratings are what they are....I know virtually all of the veteran officials and most of the coaches as well. Iwill definitely take into consideration their views/opinions before I would yours.

hoops gal you are wrong about Mr Billman...he is from Vanceburg which is in Lewis County.....Since you have so much confidence in your remarks such as "the fact remains that lots of veteran officials are doing JV games this year.", then please list 5 or 6 veterans that are doing JV games this year.

I don't know about the other regions you guys are fighting about but I talked to a 13th region official last night, who I think should be towards the top and isn't. He said that a bunch of the top officials are thinking about quiting next year because they aren't trying to get better officials or even train them to be better, but they are only taking care of the good old boys. If the assigning sec. isn't going to try to make the region better then why have one???? I watch a lot of 13th region games and to tell you the truth once you get past the top 5, 6 or 7 guys you don't have one official that can call a middle school game. Not the officials fault they can't call because no body has trained them. Thats the problem most of the time, NO TRAINING!!!!!!

The rating system in Kentucky is ridiculous. You can't go by who is the best officials by who goes to the state tourney. If you have connections you get to go and if you don't deal in the politics you don't. Coaches have 80% of the vote and they have never officiated before in their lives. They don't know if officials are in the right position or know the rules, they just know if they win or lose and who was calling when they lost and put those officials at the bottom for the most part. There are some coaches that do an honest job at this rating system, but to give a coach 80% is just crazy, why not give them the 20% and give someone who goes out and watches and evaluates these officials every night the 80% of the ratings. Seems like that would be the most logical thing to do, no wait the most logical way would be to not give the coaches any say at all who is the best official. That would take care of a lot of the "favors" done in all these regions for votes. We have assigning secrateries and that is who should be rating the officials, that is there job and that is what they are paid for. Coaches are paid to coach and yell at officials, not rate them. That is why the best don't end up at the state tourney, most of the time.

Joe Bilman may be The Worst ref I have ever seen call a game!!!!!!!

 

Obviously you must have something personal against. He is an outstanding referee, I have seen him call a lot of games and I have never left thinking he was biased toward any one team.:irked:
