I don't want to ever lay eyes on this man again. He called our district one year and that was enough for me. He is a terrible official imo. Awful in every game he called in the tournament. In the first round our opponent shot 59 free throws and we shot 22. We were outscored 28 points from the foul line, had 3 technicals called on us, each which resulted in a loss of ball posession, our coach was tossed from the game...and it still went into OT believe it or not. We had 4 players foul out and 2 more had 4 fouls. We sent the tape to the KSHAA and they banned him from calling tournaments outside his region for 2 years, but it was too late for our kids at that time.:mad: Powell County played the next night and they also were so upset at him that they forwarded a tape to the KHSAA as well. He doesn't need to be officiating games imo.

Ashurst is a VERy arrogant man that thinks he's above the game at the people should be there to watch him. One major instance that I had with him was when Rockcastle County and Clay County met in a first round game in the district tournament about 5-6 years back. It was not even 10 seconds into the game when my cousin, Johnna Abney, was called for a charge at the top of the key. When she came down, it looked to me like she had twisted her ankle so I was concerned about her and must have had a concerned look on my face. Well, I was the person that was keeping the official book for the entire tournament and when Ashurst turned to signal the foul to me, he saw the look on my face, assumed it was me questioning his call and ran over, got in my face and said that if I EVER question a call of his again that he would give Rockcastle County a technical foul and eject me no matter what game it was in. Now I know that those who keep the official book are supposed to maintain an unbiased opinion throuhgout a game but it's hard to not make a facial expression when you think someone may have been hurt on a play. Ashurst is one of the most arrogant people I have ever been around. Heck he even tried to give me attitude when Cawood hosted a regional baseball tournament either that same school year or the one after and he told me again to never question one of his calls.

My favorite official is Tony Grey. He lets a lot of stuff go but he is fair.

Pete Maddux is an up and coming official in the 16th. He is fairly new but does a great job.

Statman Hensley arrogance is what you call it it should be called respect and it is very deserving of Mr. Ashurst when you can walk in his shoes and deal with what he deals with then you can call it arrogance. He is the best offcial in the state and if you are not afraid of him then you would understand him he is very proffesinal and works the same game everynight you can watch him on ESPN this evening if you would like. As far as Philpot goes he has grown up a lot and worked his way up to a fair and respsected offcial in the 13th region. Yes Ralph Woods ais a good guy but Ralph has seen better days on the floor. Maybe you should jhoin the brotherhood of offcials and lets see how it should be done.

From the 13th I enjoy watching Marc Estep, Glenn Gray, Mike Philpot and Mike Ashurst. Several new officals are very good as well. Yanky seems to be a good offical in what few games I have seen him.

You are right...I was thinking of Hall. And, Bobby Hall, Randy Taylor, Tim Sublett have all done JV games this year.

 

I seriously doubt Bobby Hall is doing any JV games this year. He's the #1 rated official in the 16th and I haven't seen him do a JV in a very long time. Maybe it was another case of mistaken identity! :thumb:

I've seen as much or more b-ball than anyone on here I would venture to say. I have an opinion and my guess it is much more informed than YOURS!!!

You may have a much more informed opinion about alot of things in this world, I don't argue that but I can bet that it's not officiating. I don't claim to known everything in this world and some would say I know little:D:D but I do know a bit about officiating.

I know for a FACT it was Kenny Clark, and the kid he T'd up was an 8th grader from WC. That is a fact. Ask Perry Yates. The ratings are what they are....I know virtually all of the veteran officials and most of the coaches as well. Iwill definitely take into consideration their views/opinions before I would yours.

I'm done arguing with you. This thread was meant to give some officials a bit of credit for the very difficult job they do but some people can't resist but to bash the officials. Try coming out and doing their job for one week or even one game, I think you would have different feelings about bashing the officials.

Well said! I am an official and know of that which I speak to some degree. When you are in the stands, usually setting in an elevated position from the floor, and an obvious advantage of angle and distance it is easier to see a play as it develops. However calling the action on the floor, from point blank range, and sometimes having an obscured view caused from the players themselves... Well it is much more difficult than you think it would be.
