Why don't you give us your opinion on the top 5-7 officials, that's what the thread is about, and we'd love to hear your opinion.

 

Well thanks, don't say much but this is a good topic.

 

Its funny that you ask bacause I don't know all their names but I will do what I can.

 

In no order, both Grays, Ashurst, Philpot, Griffen, Ealy(young guy with dark hair) and there are a few that I don't know their names. One is fairly new, just been calling a few years (tall and dark headed, think he is from London), another one is from M'boro, Embree(thats close to his name).

 

Sorry about the names but I just know most of them by their faces. Will work on the names, looks like this topic may go on for a while.

Then you would be getting back to the situation of "contracting" officials like they do in Indiana. I have friends that still officiate and they have contracts years ahead of times for certain schools and games.

 

Talk about a biased system.

 

Somone talked earlier about letting officials rate each other. That would be a hoot. Some people would lose friends if they are honest with people. I had to tell a guy once that he was in over his head and not to do a game (it was a preseason scrimmage). Hardest thing I ever had to do, but it did make my decision easier when I dedcided to hang it up. I knew it was time to go when the speed of the game had picked up and I no longer could get in position. Desire was still there, but the wheels were shot!

 

Some people never quite learn that however! There are a few D 1 guys out there that need to hang it up for that fact alone!

Yeah, you're right about the bias system. That's the way that Ohio officials get their games as well. Instead of having the games assigned, you have to get your own games. I really don't see how that system could work. Now, I'd say that some or most school or coaches would want and have fair officials but there are always that small few who want every egde they can get and being able to pick and choose your officials is definately an advantage.

I've seen as much or more b-ball than anyone on here I would venture to say. I have an opinion and my guess it is much more informed than YOURS!!!

Are you sure about that? That is a pretty bold statement and somehow I doubt it very seriously. Unless you are pretty old, I'd say that there are quite a few people on here who have forgotten more ball than you've watched. Well, let me inform you on SOMETHING since you already know every thing ......... Watching basketball does not make you an expert on officiating.

As I said it was my opinion.........I think I can make a strong case for it too. There is absolutely no conflict of interest for officials to evaluate other officials......I didnt say it would be done in a public forum either. I guarantee that if you give your local group of officials a list of their membership and ask them to pick out the top 10 among them you would end up with the same group of 10 from everyone.....maybe not in the same order but you would still get the cream.......If these guys are to be men of integrity when it comes to enforcing the rules of the game then surely they have enough integrity to offer an educated opinion when it come to evaluation of their fellow offical.

 

I'm sorry but I disagree with you here. I think it's huge conflict of interest, even if it's done in secret. Your last statement, while I wish that were the case I really don't think it would. On the court the officials are working as a team but when you're competeing with someone for a certain position or playoff assignment, I think it then becomes a conflict of interest.

If those are your top 5-7, I have no idea who your bottom 5-7 would be. :scared:

Jon Campbell- He is doing some D3 college games now so he doesn't have as much time for HS Basketball. Still the best in my opinion.

 

Dan Sheilds- Very good with the coaches and players. He lets you talk, as long as your not being smart with him.

 

Dave Canaract-Style very much like Sheilds. He lets you ask questions from what I can tell and knows the game well.

 

As for Tim O'Hara, when I played I thought he was one of the best ones, but I really haven't been impressed with him over the past few years.

 

 

After having had the pleasure of watching Mr Campbell and Mr Kanerak work together at a game this evening I stand by my earlier post and that is Mr Kanerak is plan awful. Campbell wasn't at his best but I think the poor performance by Kanerak was probably causing him to be inconsistent as well.

 

In the game prior I did see Mr O'Hara call the game with Charlie Chappie and you can see why these 2 are among the 9th regions best.

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with you on that list. I watched 13th Region basketball for almost all of my life and have yet to say that those on your list, with the exception of two, Embree and one of the Grays, are any good.

 

Personally, I really don't think that a principal at a school should be allowed to call games in which his/her team plays OR they shouldn't call in a post-season tournament that could decide who his/her school could potentially play.

 

Ashurst is a VERy arrogant man that thinks he's above the game at the people should be there to watch him. One major instance that I had with him was when Rockcastle County and Clay County met in a first round game in the district tournament about 5-6 years back. It was not even 10 seconds into the game when my cousin, Johnna Abney, was called for a charge at the top of the key. When she came down, it looked to me like she had twisted her ankle so I was concerned about her and must have had a concerned look on my face. Well, I was the person that was keeping the official book for the entire tournament and when Ashurst turned to signal the foul to me, he saw the look on my face, assumed it was me questioning his call and ran over, got in my face and said that if I EVER question a call of his again that he would give Rockcastle County a technical foul and eject me no matter what game it was in. Now I know that those who keep the official book are supposed to maintain an unbiased opinion throuhgout a game but it's hard to not make a facial expression when you think someone may have been hurt on a play. Ashurst is one of the most arrogant people I have ever been around. Heck he even tried to give me attitude when Cawood hosted a regional baseball tournament either that same school year or the one after and he told me again to never question one of his calls.

 

As far as Mike Philpot goes, let's not get me started there.

 

One official that I like seeing call games is Mr. Ralph Woods. I know that many don't think he's all that great but I can't help but to like the guy. He was always willing to talk to people and always cut jokes. During baseball games, he would come over to me and tell me a joke or two before every game. He's a good guy.

hoops gal you are wrong about Mr Billman...he is from Vanceburg which is in Lewis County.....Since you have so much confidence in your remarks such as "the fact remains that lots of veteran officials are doing JV games this year.", then please list 5 or 6 veterans that are doing JV games this year.

 

You are right...I was thinking of Hall. And, Bobby Hall, Randy Taylor, Tim Sublett have all done JV games this year.

If those are your top 5-7, I have no idea who your bottom 5-7 would be. :scared:

Thought we were talking about good refs and not what kind of people they are.

 

Mr. Woods is a great and funny guy but can't get up an down the floor like most of the 13th region guys and girls.

I don't want to ever lay eyes on this man again. He called our district one year and that was enough for me. He is a terrible official imo. Awful in every game he called in the tournament. In the first round our opponent shot 59 free throws and we shot 22. We were outscored 28 points from the foul line, had 3 technicals called on us, each which resulted in a loss of ball posession, our coach was tossed from the game...and it still went into OT believe it or not. We had 4 players foul out and 2 more had 4 fouls. We sent the tape to the KSHAA and they banned him from calling tournaments outside his region for 2 years, but it was too late for our kids at that time.:mad: Powell County played the next night and they also were so upset at him that they forwarded a tape to the KHSAA as well. He doesn't need to be officiating games imo.
