First of all, these refs are getting paid to do a job. And some of them really just can't do it. Much as I love the game, I would never take such a position unless I knew for sure I could do a great job. This is not a position where you can learn as you go. At the high school level, the questionable calls have more meaning as far as winning and losing records. The main issue is that there are a lot of great coaches here, and the different skills that they are teaching are being thrown to the shed,because the refs can't make a simple call such as a charge or someone going over the back of a great box out. The questionable officials should remain at the middle school level until they are more proficient at what they are getting paid to do.

You are right, some officials are being brought up the ranks too soon but I don't thinks it's by choice. I don't think we have the problem in my area but many areas do. It's a big problem not only to get officials but to keep officials, especially quality officials. Why would anyone want to officiate? A rookie comes in and maybe has a bad game or misses a call and now his name is mud and plastered all over websites saying what an idiot he is and you wonder why there isn't enough good officials. Would you like that? I doubt it! New officials will one day be veteran officials but if they are ran off when they start then you'll never know. There are many problems for the shortage of officials but the main reason is fans. Fans gripe about the officials but it's their fault for the recruiting problem the associations face. Until people realize this, it will continue in many places. I officiate and I'll tell ya this, I don't do it for the money....I do it for the kids and my love of the sport. That's it! Fans love to gripe and complain about the food but they don't want to help cook it!

By any chance were you at the 9th Region All A game last night. Chappy, O'Hara, and Pouncy were the 3 officials. I think if you asked NCC or St. Henry fans this game couldn't have been officiated much worse. Wosrt of all was Pouncy who seemed to be trying to make up for bad calls all night.

 

Well, I would guess that those are the 2nd 3rd and 4th rated officials in the 9th behind Campbell, who might have been doing a college game that night. I have stated throughout this thread that I don't think Pouncy is all that great but he is obviously highly thought of by a lot of people. Chappy, as stated by someone else, might not be able to run with em like he used to but he still works hard at and is in position a majority of the time. IMO O'Hara, along with Campbell are the best in the region and everyone else is chasing. Who might've you suggested that they assign to the game???

Well FWIW, I don't fully appreciate the ninth region officials until I have to watch a game with officials from somewhere else around the state. I would probably take a handful of officials the ninth offers over the top official from at least 2 different regions...

13th - Mike Ashurst, Brent Gray, Philpott

14th - Tommy Hutton, Brian Cook, Mike Melton, Jeff Richie, Larry Thacker

15th - Mike Walker, Roger Fairchild

Good post....well said.:thumb:People should be patient new with referees. It usually takes several years to get into a comfort zone.

He's been bad any time I've seen him this year. Too inexeperienced at this point, imo.

Wilson in the 13th is a pretty good one.
