Highlands was all business. No one player was overwhemingly a factor in beating BG, a true team effort. The whole is always greater than the sum parts.

 

Congatulations to a very special team and to the community at large. Going to the state championships always reaffirms how blessed I was to have been a part of that tradition and just how special of a community it is.

 

Same time next year, hold the rain.

 

My sentiments exactly. Great win for the BIRDS and a hard loss for BG. Both teams should be applauded for their efforts. The game was well worth the trip. Got to see Skip Hicks and Vic Brown.

I know that as a Highlands fan I am biased, but I truly believe this Birds team, with the great senior leadership, could have definitely give both X and Trinity a very good game. Not saying the Birds would win for sure but I would certainly not count them out. Last night, the Birds D gave up only 7 points to team that averaged 49 per game including putting up 28 against Trinity. Anyone that thinks either of the big schools would definitely beat the Birds is dreaming.

Absolutely. It would be interesting if Highlands could move up to 6A for a few years (if it were allowed) and see what happens. They might not have the guns EVERY year to match T or X, but many years I think they could compete with them.

I am headed for the Trinity and St. X shortly. I will post my opinion after viewing the contest. Good luck to both teams...

I heard a bunch of the underclassmen talking about what time they were going to be up there tomorrow lifting. Seriously.

 

LN, I'm not sure howmany showed up throughout the day, but when our son got home, he said there were 7 current Sophomores in the weight room today. Remember boys, Champions are made in the off-season!

Five times.

That would have to be Highlands over Hopkinsville (21-14) in 1996.

Absolutely. It would be interesting if Highlands could move up to 6A for a few years (if it were allowed) and see what happens. They might not have the guns EVERY year to match T or X, but many years I think they could compete with them.

 

I agree it would be fun to see what happened, but when some talk was made about moving up to 6 instead of 5A, it was quickly kaboshed....as the 6A district in N. Ky was already "full" (what were there, 5 teams in the district) and the KHSAA wasn't going to let it happen even if Highlands had asked. With Cooper coming on line next year, the situation doesn't get any better.

 

Besides, its a pretty big accomplishment winning the state championships playing up two classes. While I have nothing but respect for the Trinity program as it is first class all around, one thing that puts a special asterisk on the Highlands championships is that more than a couple have been obtained when we were playing up. And when we won championships when we weren't playing up, we were one of the smallest teams in the class. I would think a lot of Trinity's championships were won when they were one of the larger teams in their class and of course none were obtained playing up.

Let's not forget that this 17th state title and 11th undefeated season have an additional meaning. It was a Win For Quinn!

Leatherneck, St X "appears" to be getting better players the last few years, if Freshman and JV results mean anything. I know they always don't. We should start taking a few of those championships T has been getting the last 6 years. I think T had an advantage for a few years due to their new stadium. Now X has the latest and greatest (except for that darn track), and should swing the pendulum back to X. X has a few awesome RB's this year. I pray to the Lord they don't live out of county.

I understand completely that Highlands fears absolutely no one, but they wanted no part of Cincy St. X(recall the injuries sustained in the Colerain game a couple of years ago).

I think the time has come, that they could play with these teams as well. I hope Highlands gets the chance to play Colerain, Elder, or St. X. So they can get in on the National rankings.
