I know this quote was not from you but in reply to something else you wrote. Just the other day you were "talking to me"about not all HHS people were "anti-Rocks" - (and maybe trying to conjure some support - though you do not need it) - and then I go and read this on what was supposed to be a HHS-BGHS thread. I am confused ????:confused::confused:

2) Why would someone thinking a team could beat another team be construed as "anti" anything?

I just hope that they are better prepared for the challenge this year. In the LexCath game, they must have had at least 5 turnovers in the first half for the huge hole they dug for themselves. I didn't go to last year's game, but they seemed unprepared then from what I heard. I just hope, for the life of me, that they can give a showing that truly represents Bowling Green football. All the predictions of BG getting blown out are deserved no matter how ticked they make me because we haven't played football representative of a state runner up let alone a state champion the previous two years. I would like to think that those players who are going to the carpet for the 3rd year in a row can leave with tears of joy instead of anguish. It'll be another huge challenge, I just hope we are ready this year. Time will tell.

 

 

And yes, alot of of us BG alums do get sensitive about our mascot because we have heard all the wisecracks before. I've been hearing Barney and Grimace jokes for the last 17 years and counting. It's a little old and stale at this point. We are tired of explaining what a Purple is. Hopefully, you'll find out on Friday. If not, we'll live to play again.

I have had a chance to see both teams play several times this year, BGHS a few more times than HHS. Here is how I would rate the two teams by positions. OFFENSE: Quarterbacks/ BG has a three year starter who runs and throws equally well. Steelman tends to thrive on making big plays when pass blocking breaks down. He also will run several Quarterback draws and a bootleg or two often for big gains. I'd say this position is about equal between the two teams. Receivers/ Bghs has the edge here with two D-1 recruits, a 6'6'' wideout and 6'5'' TE. Both are very hard to keep in check. The other two or three receivers don't get many opportunities to make plays but do a nice job of holding down field blocks and making catches when needed. Runningbacks/ Probably a draw between HHS and BG. BGHS has the usuall trio of outstanding backs with two power backs and a third shifty/quick back. All three catch the ball well and tend to get several passes per game usually as a safety valve in the flats. Offensive line/ Big advantage to HHS. Probably one of the best units I've ever seen. BGHS's O-line has improved greatly during the course of the season but will probably have difficulty with the Birds quickness. Kicking/ Punting/ Have to give a slight edge to HHS. BGHS has a very reliable extra point kicker (54 straight PAT'S) but has struggled with the few field goals that have been attempted. He will also kick the ball in the end zone about 50% of the time. Punting is equally scary for both teams, probably a product of offenses that rarely punt. DEFENSE/ Defensive line / HHS has the edge with their quickness and depth. Dale seems to be able to rotate at least six different players over three down lineman with no drop in talent. Linebackers/ edge to HHS although BGHS has one outstanding linebacker(Carpenter) who signed with Northwestern to play strong safety. At 5'10'' and about 195# he's extemely quick and aggressive but too small to play a D-1 linebacker. Defensive backs/ Probably a draw. Somewhat concerned about HHS pass defense especially with the size of BGHS's two D-1 caliber receivers. The big wideout goes both ways playing safety on defense. Sorry if that was a little long winded. If both teams play a perfect game( minimal turnovers,no huge special teams blunders or plays), I think HHS should win by 7 to 14 points. Everyone knows perfect games don't usually happen, but I just don't see BGHS holding HHS's running game to under 21 points. If BGHS has a weakness it's defending the run. On the other hand, I don't see BGHS scoring more than 21 on HHS's Defense although BGHS probably has the best passing game the Birds will have seen all year, and if the birds have a weakness on defense it's defending the pass. This should be a great game and if the birds should happen to not bring home number 17 I'm moving back to zip code 41075. I still haven't gotten over the loss in 1995 to the purples.

 

BGHS has recently had a lot D1 talent but fails to win the big games. That is because they don't play a strong schedule during the year. After seeing them against CCH, in the 2007 State Championship, the did not appear very disciplined and folded early in the game. Last year they had no less than 5 D1 players and CCH had the game in hand after the 1st quarter. I am in no way a HHS fan, but they are the best coached most proficient highschool team I have seen in a long time. Not only are they a great team, they are all very good athletes and anyone of the skilled players can make a big play. This team also has a lot of heart and are very confident. Heck, they have a linebacker returning punts!! In regard to the BGHS QB, I am sure he is a good kid and player, but unless he has improved a lot from last year, I don't think he can come close to Cecil. Just one mans opinion. I hope both teams have a good game and return home safe & healthy. HHS wins this one big....CCH should be back in the hunt by 2010.

For a newby, not a bad asessment. Lex Cath did the same thing that CCH did last year. Early on after things didnt go their way they packed it in.

I can't remember being this hyped up for a State game in atleast 15 years! HHS is truly a great team of gentlemen first, scholars second, and athletes third. These guys may be the nicest group of guys I have ever met.

 

I remember it like it was just last year seeing Trey, Ryan, Zach, and others on the 5th and 6th grade green team. This is where pride starts. Anyone who is anyone in Fort Thomas who played football remembers which teams you were on. I still see my little league coaches all the time and never get tired of compliments on our teams etc. If your from the North of town, you were on the White or Red team, Center of town was Blue and Gold teams, if you were a roughneck from the southside-Green team all the way! That Post article talked about HHS tradition, pride, and honor of wearing a Bluebird uniform and thats where it starts.

 

Who doesn't forget that first football practice, riding your bike to practice with your helmet on the handlebars--in my case riding on the back of my brother's bike standing on the pegs, wearing full gear, showing up to new people from different schools, different attitudes and personalities, but all there for one common bond--Fort Thomas Football.

 

Whether it was your first tackle, first pat on the butt from the head coach, first sack, first touchdown, first penalty(OOPS), we all remember it and cherish those memories and will forever. I was not the best High school player, not even average. But I was a member of a State Title team and got my brains beat in all year on both scout teams and saw lots of 2nd half action in many games. That's ok if that's all I got. I still have the memory of walking off the football field for the last time as a member of a State Champion Team. And, NO ONE can take that feeling away from me.

 

Seniors-and my dear Nephew whom I love so very much and am so proud of for all you have accomplished already in your 18 years on and off the field: Leave everything you got Friday on that field and you will not have any regrets. I know you can win and you know you can win. Dig down deep and remember all those hot days in death valley, Woodfill, Rossford, or Moyer as a little leaguer and remember those dreams. Remember all the times you have played football in your backyard or in the cul de sac of your streets with your brothers/friends until the street lights came on using telephone poles as pile-ons. Remember the voice of the announcer that you would call out as you ran for the end zone....."(insert name) going down the sideline and he's in for the touchdown and the Birds win the state title!"

I guess the other 8 playoff games leading up to the state weren't big games, huh.. I don't disagree that BG didn't play well vs Lex Cath in 05 and CC in 06, but, it happens and each year there are different kids on the field, especially from 2 yrs ago. Even as bad as BG played last year and it was bad, they didn't get beat all that bad by CC..I think CC beat Highlands twice last year, so, does that mean they fail to win big games too. IMO, the last 2 years the schedules hurt them. Same can't be said for this year as imo, they have had a much tougher road to travel than Highlands has. I think the tough games with Owensboro, JHardin will help them along with the fact that these returning players from the last 2 yrs have state championship experience, something FTH can't say.. Yes, Coach Mueller has been there before, but, the kids haven't and you never know how they are going to react when they're on the big stage. I'm sure all Highlands fans will say they'll be just fine and they may be, but, in truth, you really just don't know. I think the experience factor could be in Bgreens favor this year.

Watching that game in person, that team did not look prepared to play in a state championship game. The turnovers were just a part of it. No focus, intensity, execution, etc. and I expect a team to be prepared to give another team its best shot when playing on such a large stage. Mentally, they weren't prepared for LexCath 2 years ago. They were a better team than that.

Same can't be said for this year as imo, they have had a much tougher road to travel than Highlands has.

In the playoffs maybe. In the regular season--no way.

 

...these returning players from the last 2 yrs have state championship experience, something FTH can't say.

Our coaches have state championship experience...a lot of it. And the players are used to the big game, and big stadium environment. They've played in one large (pro/college) stadium each of the past three years.

 

As for big games...there are no small games. They consider every game to be part of the state championship run. These are just the final four--and most challenging--quarters.

Allow me to address some things...

 

First of all, I think that BG has DEFINITELY had the tougher postseason schedule this year, especially compared to the last couple of years in 3A. Take last year, for example. CCH had to take on HHS, then defending state champ LexCath, then a very strong Johnson Central team before taking on BG. BG's road to the title last year was no way near as difficult. This year, HHS has had a much easier time of it than the eastern champ in old 3A had it.

 

True, HHS had a more challenging regular season than BG did, but I do think that having to play at JH and at OHS (as opposed to hosting LCC and LCHS) will really be a plus for the Purples.

 

Secondly, for all the talk among the HHS and BG fans here about the great traditions of these two programs, I honestly don't think this will be much of a factor this Friday night. What will matter is how these current young men of HHS and BG make/don't make plays in the game.

 

HHS and BG are great teams this year... come on now... does anyone really think this game won't come down to how a few key momentum-changing plays turn out???? This game could go either way.

 

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is a great match-up, and God I do hope that HHS wins, by 1 or 100 points, I don't care. If (God forbid!) HHS doesn't win it all this year, then I'll be at least a little comforted in knowing BG won the title... the BG faithful (especially PH and Mrs. PH) are probably the classiest fans on this site!
