You may be right about the experience factor because they've been in the state title the last two years; then again, these Highlands kids have played at Paul Brown Stadium and in the Herbstreit Classic the last two years. Both are big time, high stress situations. While its not quite the same as playing for the state title, keep in mind a lot of these seniors started as sophomores when we played LexCath and as juniors when we played CovCath in the playoffs. Our players actually believed those games were for the state titles. The pressure on the Highlands kids to finally beat an Ohio team in the Herbie was very, very intense. They came through with flying colors, beating a Trotwood team that has 6 or more D1 players. In hindsight, I can't think of any other game that could have been scheduled to better prepare us for BG. Big time venue; big time pressure; playing against a team with stud receivers and a stud qb. Thus, while I may be wrong, I'm not sure BG's appearances in the last two title games provides them much of an advantage at all.

 

It actually may turn out to be a disadvantage. If people don't think some BG kids are feeling the pressure to win it the third time; not choke; not turn the ball over; not do whatever they did the last two years to get blown out, I think those people are in denial. It will definitely be there regardless of what speeches Coach Wallace gives; what posts are made on here; what words are said to one another between players this week. In the back of their minds, they have to wonder if its going to happen again. There is definitely going to be a monkey on the BG players' back. I'm not saying they won't be able to overcome it. They very well may be able to do so with the talent they have. But its undeniably there regardless of what the players state in newspapers.

There's pressure to win, sure, but, if you lose, you live to play another day and it has no bearing on the big picture. I find it hard to believe that game has the same impact and pressure as a state championship game. Just don't see it. As far as playing against Lex Cath in 06 and CC in 06, BG did the same and although both teams lost, I've got to say that the stage those games were played on gives BG an advantage.

An early turnover or a Highlands big play early could even enhance that monkey or it could make them that much more determined and motivated to prove they belong. I believe they know they were alot better than they showed the last 2 yrs, maybe still would have lost with there best effort, but, certainly not as bad as they got beat. I trully don't think you'll see a meltdown with this bunch, but, it'll definately be interesting to see. On the other hand, if BG starts out strong and jumps on them early, I think that monkey goes away and you'll see the real BG team that everyones been raving about all year. Should be a very good game to see thats for sure.

Just like NKy fans, West Ky fans stick together. You're 100% correct about BG handling pressure the last 2 years and if you'll read my prior posts, I've said the same. As far as Highlands eating pressure for breakfast, well, obviously they didn't handle it too well the last couple of years either or they would have been there instead of who was, so, if you're going to use the last 2 years as a measuring stick for BG, then you have to do the same with Highlands. Both teams were knocked out by the same teams. Highlands was more competitive in those games, but, lost just the same. This year is a different year and only time will tell how the outcome will be..

Of course the pressure of the state game is more than the pressure of the Herbie, but near as much think for the following reasons: 1. you can't imagine how big "the Ohio football programs are better" monkey was on the Highlands kids; 2. the build up by the Trotwood fans (on here and elsewhere) of all their athletes was crazy (with all the hype given to Roundtree, if I was Austin Collinsworth I'd have been puking due to nerves for a week); and 3. as pointed out by my compadres, there is big pressure on Highlands kids to win every game, but in particular, big high profile games like the Herbie.

 

So while I'm sure the butterflies for the Highlands kids will be fluttering around a tad bit more, but they will take some solace in knowing that they've played in those pressure cookers and won. The BG kids will also feel the fluttering butterflies but the last time they played in such a big game, the result was not one that they wanted.

 

I do agree with you that if things go bad for BG at beginning, the wheels may wobble and may even fall off. I think if BG wins the coin toss, they are going to elect to take the ball. I think Wallace knows they have to score first.

Highlands has set a goal to be undefeated this year, IMO every game has been played with that same focus and intensity. This team is made up of 3-classes that went undefeated as Freshman. They know what it takes to finish the season on top.

 

They stand this week at the thresold of completing their ultimate goal, "Champions".

The Herbie had NATIONAL exposure and pressure as well as ESPN eyeballs (not on our game but the event). Now, would the Bird's rather lose in the Herbie and win state? YES! But I firmly believe that the experience of being in that game, being behind, and overcoming to win as well as the great exhibition of intestinal fortitude shown against a very capable LCentral team more than prepares this flock of Birds to soar to the ultimate height of STATE CHAMPION. GO BLUE...and blue teamers!!

If I am wrong, you can certainly correct me here. I do believe his comment was in response to a statement of 'we' would rather win a big game against Ohio than to win a championship. I do not think anyone has belittled the BG team, as a matter of fact I am pretty sure that everyone has talked about what a great season they have had and what a great opponent they will be this Friday.
