I know this is a little off topic too but . . . what do you do when the other people you are with refuse to leave any tip at all for their meal. Their rationale is that they are paying for the meal and the servers are being paid to work . . . I always feel SO BAD for the waiter/waitress and make sure that MY portion of the tip is generous!!!!

I just hope that the waiter/waitress realizes that I appreciate all their hard work!!

If I had the money I'd leave the decent and above waiters and waitresses 150%, alas I'll have to stick with a tenth of that for now. Between 15-20% is what I usually go for. If service isn't that good I try to determine wether or not the server is having a really bad day or if they just don't care... if it's the former I sometimes overtip with the hopes that they'll have a better day. If it's the latter, then probably 10-15... I think I tipped a dollar once but that's because my dates both told me not to tip him at all because he was kind of rude... long story.

Here is another question a bit off topic. Do you tip your barber/stylist? A lot of places seems like the cost of the haircut is something like $9 or $12. What do you tip, if you do?

20%

Does anyone else think bartenders get tipped way to much. I still tip them every time but it just seems silly unless they are making you a special drink. I rotate buying rounds with people so it works out better that way.

Definitely. I dont know why we all tip for beers. Thats one reason I like going up to the clubhouse here I can just put it on my account and tip at the end.

25 cent tips? Who am I tiping...a monkey?
For the last time.

There are no monkeys!

I stick with the standard 15 to 20 percent. If your good a looking lady or give me great service youre gonna get more.

My question is this: What about a tip at a buffet setting ? The servers really don't do much other than grab you a refill or two. I still tip them 15 to 20 percent although I don't think they deserve it for the amount of work they do.

^ Still 20%...you'd be amazed...sometimes at a buffet they work harder...not only are they clearing your plates...they're doing it multiple times....with some of us even more :D. Plus drink refills, and cleaning around the buffet station, I always felt that I worked harder on Brunch days.

I didnt know they washed the dishes also. Buffets are usually pretty crowded too I guess.

It should be a requirement by law that every citizen work with the public at some point in their life. I did once and hated it. I hated everyday of it.

How about restaurants that automatically add the tip in with the bill? I ate at Johnny Rockets the other day and there was an 18% gratuity added into the bill. I don't see anything wrong with that, but the service was absolute TERRIBLE! I think this might be because she already knew she was getting an 18% tip no matter what. I refused to leave any extra because I think 18% was too much in her case with the service she gave to us.

Did you have a bunch of people with you ?

I knew places did this with parties about a set amount but not with just regular familes and what not.

Nope it was just me and one other person. The bill wasn't very high either, so I was rather suprised to see the 18% included but I think they do that with every bill. I don't see a problem with it, but in my experience, it just made the service that much worse, and cost the waitress from getting a better tip because she did not even give us refills once.

I would think for most buffet times, a restaurant would have a dishwasher. I know at the club here, when we have our buffet's, brunch, italian night, and steak night, etc. we always have a dishwasher there.

Which brings up another point for those that have been servers, how much do you tip out to the dishwashers? There had been some debate about it amongst the servers.

Ms. UKPat says she only tips out the bar and the busser. But in a lot of places you tip out the washer and hostess as well.
