October 30, 200718 yr Ms. UKPat says she only tips out the bar and the busser. But in a lot of places you tip out the washer and hostess as well. The hostess? Now that I would have an issue with. Do they really DO anything but stand there, look pretty, and walk to a table?
October 30, 200718 yr The hostess? Now that I would have an issue with. Do they really DO anything but stand there, look pretty, and walk to a table? Give them more tables than other servers.
October 30, 200718 yr Ok I have been watching this thread unravel (pun intended:D) and as a server I must say that most people, aside from most members of BGP, don't truly know tipping ettiquette. Being a server is much harder than people realize and I don't mean in terms of labor, that part is easy. I'm talking in terms of relationships with guests. A good tip can be lost within minutes and I don't think that most people realize this. All it takes is one funny look or a joke that the guest doesn't get or like and there goes the tip. And it's hard to judge what kind of mood a guest is in. If they are in a bad mood for whatever reason they are very hard to deal with and/or please. Another thing is table visits. People don't like it when you are breathing down their neck asking every minute if everything is okay, but 2 visits doesn't do it either so that aspect can bring about problems as well. Don't get me wrong im not calling anyone out on here you all have your own opinions on tipping ettiquette and that's fine. Just giving you guys a little insight on what it's like. And if you do go above and beyond on tipping, expect GREAT service next time you come in. And if you haven't seen the movie "Waiting" then you should, cause it explains a lot of things especially "the cardinal rule" lol.
October 30, 200718 yr I would think for most buffet times, a restaurant would have a dishwasher. I know at the club here, when we have our buffet's, brunch, italian night, and steak night, etc. we always have a dishwasher there. Which brings up another point for those that have been servers, how much do you tip out to the dishwashers? There had been some debate about it amongst the servers. At the restaurant I work at we tip out 3% of our sales for the night to the hostess', bussers, etc. and I HATE it.
October 30, 200718 yr 25% to the waitress, 20 bucks to the valet, and 5 bucks at Super Cuts. Man! You are a big timer! Please. I just believe in "pay it forward." Do well by people who do well by you.
October 30, 200718 yr Please. I just believe in "pay it forward." Do well by people who do well by you. :thumb: I kinda feel the same way H.S. I've tried to tip people at places like Wal Mart and Best Buy before. If I've got the money I always give a little extra. Ya never know, a few extra dollars might change someones day.
October 30, 200718 yr Please. I just believe in "pay it forward." Do well by people who do well by you.Gee, I thought you'd enjoy the "Super Cuts" part.
October 30, 200718 yr Gee, I thought you'd enjoy the "Super Cuts" part. It's not like there is much cutting to do...
October 30, 200718 yr It's not like there is much cutting to do... Yeah, but he gets the hot wax and Polynesain Poi facial.
October 30, 200718 yr I didnt know they washed the dishes also. Buffets are usually pretty crowded too I guess. Not washing dishes just cleaning around their stations and the buffet in general.
October 30, 200718 yr How about restaurants that automatically add the tip in with the bill? I ate at Johnny Rockets the other day and there was an 18% gratuity added into the bill. I don't see anything wrong with that, but the service was absolute TERRIBLE! I think this might be because she already knew she was getting an 18% tip no matter what. I refused to leave any extra because I think 18% was too much in her case with the service she gave to us. If you feel strongly enough about the poor service you can complain and demand to not put the tip on there. If you are man/woman enough to do so, the restaurant will be more than happy to accomodate.
October 30, 200718 yr Definitely. I dont know why we all tip for beers. Thats one reason I like going up to the clubhouse here I can just put it on my account and tip at the end. Run a tab and tip at the end. Just make sure you dont drink too much or you will not only walk out without your credit card and have to knock on the door hte next morning, but you may have hte whole bar throwing drinks on your tab. :jump:
