Tipping ettiquette

Featured Replies

My wife and I argue about this all the time. I say that you should tip a restaraunt server based on the amount of the bill BEFORE any discounts are applied (like happy hour or free birthday meals). She says you tip on the amount of the actual bill.

What do you all say?

You are correct.

I usually start a 15% if they did a great job I give them more. I served some while I was in college so I am usually good to them.

I think it all just depends on the service you receive. Throwing all of the etiquette out the door. Good service means a good tip! :thumb:

20% for good service before discount.

I believe that also. But, at what amount do you base it on?

Like the others said, I'd base it on the total meal cost before discounts. I usually start at 15% and go higher or lower, depending on the service.

I usually tip depending on the amount of wine I have been served. I start at 20 percent and the blurrier it gets I'll just write in any amount.

Yea, LN and I argue all the time about this but hey depending on the amount of wine I'm served it usually gets solved.

That's my exact thoughts. I always tip at least 20% if the service is good.

Proper etiquette is to tip on the total bill before discounts. However, if you go somewhere for happy hour to eat, do you really know what the regular cost is? We used to eat at Friday's all the time on either a Friday or Saturday night. I couldn't tell you the regular price of the appetizers.

That's my exact thoughts. I always tip at least 20% if the service is good.

Ms. UKPat is a waitress and she has drilled this into my head.

Same here. 20% for great, 15% for good-decent. and about 10% if the waiter/waitress comes to the table only 3 times, to get the order, bring the food, and give the bill, and most of the time when this happens I have to go and find her/him just to give me the bill. I know some people that don't tip well, but usually I am pretty generous.

Us too. :ylsuper:
