Highlands 7th grade handled IHM at home tonight 39-24. Nice opportunity to get all of the kids in the game and a lot of kids played hard tonight. Is the layup a forgotten art?

Why do you ask???

Is the layup a forgotten art?

I do think sometimes coaches just assume kids can make a layup. You have to work on it in practice. As simple as it sounds, a lot of kids and coaches take this shot for granted.

In a perfect world, 9 or 10 kids is good depth. The problem is, injuries, etc., can limit available players during the season. For example, Summit View's 8th grade team started with 14 players. Due to 4 players being injured (three starters), they only have 10 players available right now for at least the next few weeks, maybe longer. If they had only kept 9 or 10, they would be down to 5 or 6 players for an extended period of team. They aren't going to hold tryouts during the season as circumstances dictate, so the added depth will be key right now.

Sometimes a team will have great health all year, and sometimes it won't. The problem is, you can't predict.

Three starters are currently injured? I am schocked if #24, #43 and #22 are all not regular starters and I saw all three play this past Sunday. Very impressive team. The best I've seen play in N. KY. this season thus far.

This is where we have a problem. Shooting a layup is about as fundamental as it gets. Kids get to 7th grade and can't shoot layups? Do these teams have enough gym time to work on basic fundamentals? This needs to be worked on in grade school, summer camps and on their own.

I think kids at this age are not physically mature enough to just pop the ball when they get a pass and go up strong and lay it in with confidence. Mix in the fact that the intensity of defense is a step above the way it was just a year prior. While I say that, I think it is a weak excuse. Last night my son made a great steal at midcourt playing zigzag defense against a pretty good point guard and pushed the ball out in front of him like he was taught, made a nice angle to the hoop and went up strong. Only problem was it was too strong and it careened off the front of the rim. This happens alot and I think it can be mitigated if coaches just make kids do more layup drills. The Mikan drill is an awesome drill for big men and full court layups are great for timing and conditioning. Just my two cents.

This will simply be cured with more gym time. You see it happen a lot in grade school, but when those guys start practicing 5 to 6 days a week it will work itself out.

Both of these drills are good for all players. Mikan should be done by all players, not just the big men. Same for full court layups.

If we want the kids to be well rounded, they should all learn the fundamentals. Guards should understand the drop step, up and under, etc. There are times in games when a coach can find a mismatch by posting his guard against the opponent.

Good point, guards typically have better feet anyway and if they can get an m & m er doesnt hurt to have back to the basket skills. We do have a couple big kids that like to take it coast to coast as well. Poor ball seems like its taking a beating :D but many times they finish.

Long weekend with no basketball for the Highlands 7th grade boys. Kickoff this week with R.A JOnes (Boon Co feeder) tonight and Campbell County Purple on Thursday. Word is they are playing in a tournament this weekend at Northern Kentucky University. Anybody have any info on this tourney? Middle school tourney up here.

Seems early this year, I thought that was in Jan last year? Is this the one that Kevin Bundy and Dave Simons run?

I believe it is 3rd through 8th???? I know my sons team is playing in it this weekend and he is in 4th grade. They also played in it last year when he was in 3rd grade...

Somerset Meece Middle swept 3 games tonight from Wayne County Middle.

The 6th grade won by 3, the 7th grade by 17 and the 8th grade by 5 to avenge their lone loss of the season. With the wins Meece's 6th grade moves to 3-0, the 7th grade to 2-1, and the 8th grade to 5-1. Wayne's 6th grade fell to 5-3, the 7th grade to 9-2 and the 8th grade also is 9-2. In the 8th grade game D.J. Townsend scored 34 points for the Jumpers.

For the Jazz this weekend, I hear they are short on 8th grade teams. I know there is a full amount of teams for 4th grade and 7th grade. Schedule comes out today.
