What's going on in Boyle County?

Featured Replies

2 players have transferred from the program in the last 2 days. Turner and Hager. Is something deeper going on or are these just one offs? Odd to see players leave the program. Kind of makes me wonder if Haddix is leaving....

Nothing.  Much of it is basketball driven. Hager, while a P4 football prospect that already has offers also has the same aspirations in hoops and then Turner was behind Murphy this year at QB.

Where did they transfer to?

Turner to Christian Academy-Louisville, Hager to George Rogers Clark.

Hager played behind Soph. Seneca Driver, while Turner was Jr. Baylor Murphy's backup.  I'm hearing Hager was for basketball and decided on GRC.  Turner has enrolled at CAL.  Goodluck on both players and hope everything works out for them.

Hope he plays another position other than QB.  CAL has a freshman QB this year, Jackson Burke, that will be really good in a year.  I look for him to be the starter the next 3 years.  Good, live arm, makes good decisions, high football IQ, etc.  He just needed the year to physically grow.  But then again, there's nothing wrong with a good, healthy competition.

Very often things like this are parent driven.  I don't know the parents so I'm not going to make any statements that could be misconstrued as being critical of them.

In both cases there are players on the football team who have moved past them.  Driver has eclipsed Hager as the go to tight end and Turner is the backup quarterback and would probably be in that role next year.

In basketball, Boyle has had 2 years in a row in the .500 range despite having talent.  Coaching issues, locker room problems, parental expectations?  Who knows, but it doesn't seem that their basketball program is performing as well as it should.  By way of comparison, in the last 10 years Lincoln County and Pulaski County's winning percentage is right at .70.  Boyle is at .60 in that same time span despite playing pretty much the same competition.  Boyle has the advantage of benefitting from athletes who go there due to their football success.  They attract kids from Garrard, Danville, Lincoln, Anderson, Casey, etc.  You rarely see kids going to Lincoln or PC because of football.

Boyle has the disadvantage of relying on football players (wherever they come from) and those players are usually playing into December.  In those 10 years you mentioned Lincoln has been to 2 sweet 16's and Boyle has been to 1.  In that same 10 years stretch Boyle has won 5 state football titles and Lincoln didn't even make the playoffs this year.  I'm sure Denny Webb would probably like some more gym rat basketball guys who aren't going to football camps all summer, but you play the hands you are dealt.  Lincoln is a basketball school and Boyle a football school.

Nothing is going wrong with Boyle County, both of those players love basketball and just like football. I think they both had problems with the Boyle County basketball staff. Boyle will always be a football school. Hager would be behind Seneca Driver in both sports IMO so his move don't surprise me. Let's not forget both of these kids came from previous schools. Guy Turner came from Casey County and Maddox came from DCA.

Turners sister is at Assumption, he was looking last year as well. Makes sense for the move.

Good luck to both moving forward.

This is spot on!  Tired of seeing basketball coaches getting slammed because they don't "win enough" with kids that albeit are athletic, but devote their time and energy to other sports.  Although, there are good things as far as athleticism and "used to winning" basketball is a chemistry/skill set game.  Often times, the basketball teams at these football programs are a slow burn throughout the season.  Boyle Co. won the district last year with everyone pegging DCA as unbeatable...  A wise coach once stated, "It's a marathon not a sprint".

Boyle Co doesn’t step back, they just reload and come back!! Who ya With!!

Highlands coming into 4A is going to present quite the challenge.  4A is going to have some serious top level teams IF Boyle indeed is reloading.

Someone told me recently that Highlands and Boyle County are playing each other next year.

Anyone?
