Best and worst excuses after a game

Featured Replies

We've all heard the ones about the Referee's having it out for a certain team, or the teams that supposedly watered their fields to gain advantage, but what are some of the best and worst excuses that you've heard or read when a team loses a game?

This is not really an excuse but I used to drive the football bus for East Carter football for about 25 years. We had a trip to Fleming Co. I am not sure if they still have them, but they had the best

Weather, as if both teams don't play in the same exact conditions.

This one applies more to when two NKY teams are playing than anything else but "home and away". When the trip is a half hour or less and is 4-5 exits on 275 at most, that isn't traveling. I've also never really thought anywhere in NKY was that big a home field advantage because pretty much any and all fans can get there and get in. When you have to pull kids out of school early, consider renting charter buses, and completely change routine, I'll listen.

Not sure about now but playing at home in the sixties was a huge advantage just because of attitude.

I could see that. I's imagine it took longer to get places back then as well.

"The better team didn't win tonight."

I have to say that is a legitimate statement sometimes. I’ve seen a ton of games at all levels where the better team got beat on that particular night. It happens. If 2 teams got to play each other ten times and one team would win 9 of those ten then I would still say they are the better team in the one loss.

“If we play them 10 times, we win 9….. tonight just happened to be that one.”

State games : “if only we played with HS goal posts” as if the other team didn’t have to kick with same ones.

“If they didn’t have a Michael Mayer…”

“We’re in 2A, you’re supposed to beat us”

”If we didn’t have 3 personal foul penalties, throw a pick 6, and an unqualified offensive coordinator who stopped running the ball and take out our QB, we would have won easily.”

2 years ago I personally watched a team lose in the regular season to an inferior opponent 25-21 and then turn around 3 weeks later and beat that same team 55-6 in the playoffs. I just feel in a scenario like that it is 100% a legitimate statement to say the better team lost that night. With that being said, that is also not even an “excuse” for losing as some have said. It’s obviously admitting defeat, but also stating the obvious.

If you take away their 3 big plays which made up 180 yards of offense, we only gave up 102 yards - pretty stout defense.  And we would have won 17-0.
