Best and worst excuses after a game

The yard lines that looked line Otis from
Mayberry painted them is a big one. On one sideline it’s an obvious first down, on the far sideline where the ball is spotted, it’s two yards short.

Believe it or not I saw some very interesting field painting jobs over the years. Watched a well respected school superintendent trying to wash away some misplaced lines when I got to a game site one evening. Good thing we were friends because I wore him out lol.

This is not really an excuse but I used to drive the football bus for East Carter football for about 25 years. We had a trip to Fleming Co. I am not sure if they still have them, but they had the best

"The better team didn't win tonight."

As a coach, I've been known to say that - privately - after the game among my coaches...it's a rotten feeling to know that this may, in fact, be true...........but I would flat-out be EMBARRASSED to say that out in public.    Frankly, that's usually an admission that the "better team's" coaches didn't have their team prepared.

You may have the better team - but the only thing that counts is what happens on the field.   More sportsmanlike thing to say would be "Congrats to the (other team) for playing the better game tonight."

Different sport, but in baseball I’ve always liked the we just ran out of pitching excuse.

Yeah, but that one is a pretty legitimate excuse in baseball, particularly high school baseball.     I wouldn't necessarily say it's a lame/hilarious/silly/unfounded excuse....

"Best" excuse I ever heard - not from a coach but from a player - occurred 25 years ago after a team, on the road, lost.   The quarterback told the coach that his poor passing night was due to the fact he "couldn't see over the crown on the field".

???

The other team was too motivated because our team's defensive stats were inaccurately reported on KHSAA.
