As I said 2 years ago, statements like this are dangerous. Hugely over-blown. According to the alumni that you spoke to...right? Let's not anyone try and speak for a base of thousands of people....you'll never be right.

 

You say you talk to Mike (or his family) and I have no reason not to believe you. I'd be shocked beyond recognition if: a) CCH would hire a guy with no head coaching experience; b) Mike would leave the Boone Co. school system for the CCH job. Mike is a good guy, at least he was when he was behind me in school at CCH. I wish him the best...I just don't think it'll be at CCH.

Why not? He sounds like a good fit. Very well-liked by the students as well, and I don't remember anything about how he isn't a good coach. Although I don't know if he is a CovCath grad.

In my opinion, neither Wirth nor his staff (that he'd inevitably bring) are the right fits for CCH long-term. I'll leave it at that, especially since, as cshs81 mentioned, he's probably the leader in the clubhouse.

Because Trinity is in Louisville and has a lot more population base to draw from than CovCath does. And with private schools Holy Cross, NewCath, St. Henry, Latin, Villa all within close proximity and public schools Beechwood, Holmes, Dixie all just as close, CovCath will never grow to the size of Trinity (unless lots of other schools close) and will be fortunate not to see a decrease over the upcoming years as the price increases.

 

 

The people that believe in a Catholic education aren't going to let tuition keep them from sending their son to CCH; if 6k+ hasn't stopped them, they value more than just tuition costs.

Sorry Wildcat, but to the best of my recollection Beechwood never beat Highlands in a game while Yeagle was coaching (I think they only played twice). In a couple first of the year scrimmages Beechwood outplayed Highlands at times, but we all know that first scrimmages are really not indicative of what would happen in a game. If you'll recall those scrimmages, the first half was 10 plays, don't move the chains. Highlands substituted liberally and Beechwood stuck more with its starters (heck, with Beechwood being such a small school, were there even that many real subs to even put into the scrimmage?). In the second half of the scrimmages, when it was time to move the chains, Highlands generally outscored the Tigers (and that's with Highlands continuing to sub more liberally than Beechwood, although not as liberally as during the first half of the scrimmages). Don't get me wrong, Yeagle was a great coach at Beechwood and I'm sure would have some success at CovCath against Highlands, but lets not distort his past "real" record against my Birds:jump:.

I was referring to the scrimmages when Yeagle was in his prime; my point is with the talent Highlands had then, Beechwood had no business competing with the Birds then.

Yes, Highlands did beat Beechwood more than not but they did play w/them most of the time w/the exception of a couple times when Highlands probably outscored Beechwood 4/5 to 1(starters). It don't matter, Highlands and CCH should kill Beechwood every yr but Beechwood usually holds their own pretty well.

Highlands is 4-0 against Beechwood in "real" games. As to the scrimmages, a lot of the subs Dale put into the scrimmages were not players that he would normally be used in game situations. Trust me on that as I am and have been pretty familiar with the kids on Highlands team and also attended all of the scrimmages. There was a whole lot of "lets see what this kid can do" do type substitutions that Dale started making in the first 10 play series. If you will also recall, Yeagle on two occassions abruptly ended the scrimmage during the move the chains portion ahead of the scheduled ending time, and it wasn't because Beechwood was getting the better of Highlands at the time if you know what I mean. We can debate the scrimmage issue for ever and you won't convince me and I won't convince you. But at the end of the day, Beechwood hasn't beat Highlands in real game. And I agree with you totally that they should not be expected to beat Highlands because of the obvious reasons. My post was intended to simple clarify Wildcat's post that stated that Yeagle beat Highlands sometimes. Never did it in a real game and the scrimmages that Wildcat may have been referring to weren't anything close to a real barometer of which team was better. And again, I think Yeagle was a great coach and would do wonderful things at CovCath. Personally I don't see him taking the job, because he would be "going" after some of the kids that Beechwood goes after and I think that would bother him knowing that it would hurt Beechwood.

Q and A: John Rodenberg ...

 

Just got off the phone with Rodenberg, who confirmed once and for all he was leaving CovCath for Roger Bacon. Here's what he had to say:

 

 

W: Why Bacon?

A: First of all, when I was at McNick I was always impressed with the athletes they had there. It’s a school district I live in and they approached me about coaching there. As I started looking at everything, it just made a good fit for me. I could get back into the Archdiocesan retirement. And it made a good fit for my family.

 

Q: I know you have a son (Jimmy) who’s in grade school. Will he play for you at Bacon? Did that factor in?

A: He’s going to play wherever I’m at. I’ve never been a guy to promise to be somewhere for 30 years. But I will say this: I feel like we can go over there and win. They have the potential at Roger Bacon to win a state title.

 

Q: Did this year’s state title make it easier or tougher to walk away?

A: I don’t think it affected it. I knew we had a really good team and coaching is coaching. It’s a great experience and it’s something they can never take away from us. It’s something that’s tough to get. But it never factored into the decision making process.

 

Q: What will happen to your staff?

A: I’m taking everyone that came with me. That’s a total of five guys.

 

Q: I know you haven’t gotten a chance to address the team yet, but how has today been?

A: I talked to a couple guys one on one. Everything has been positive. It’s a classy school with classy kids. That’s one of the reasons I came here.

 

Q: There is a lot of Internet chatter about your decision. Are there any misconceptions you’d like to clear up?

A: There’s one thing I’d like to clear up. I’ve read a lot about how people think I just want to get back to Ohio because it’s a better football state. And I don’t know where that came from. I’ve never said anything like that. Guys like (Dixie Heights coach) Tom Spritzky and (Highlands coach) Dale Mueller and (former Beechwood coach) Mike Yeagle and (Beechwood coach) Noel Rash, those guys are as good as any football coach I’ve come across.

 

And I do feel like us and Highlands made a great statement by playing bigger programs. If you take a look at CovCath and Highlands, we’d be Division III schools in Ohio and we played the big boys over there tough. I always felt the competition was great over here. And I’ve always said, let us play some of the Division III schools in Ohio. Let’s put it on even ground and see where we stand. Because I really feel like we could have won the Division III state championship in Ohio this year.

 

I’d appreciate you getting that in there, because I’m getting cooked (on the Internet).

A: Coming to a high-profile job and leaving after two years, you expect that. But I have to do things in the best interest of my family.

I think so as well. Some who have negative feelings for Rodenberg do so because they are still bothered by feelings that Ray was forced out. On leaving after two years, it's no secret Rodenberg wanted to get back to the GCL. CovCath got a state championship out of his two year stay and had a chance for a state title the other year being arguably the second best team in 3A by the time that season ended. Onward and upward...

From what I hear Rodenberg did not meet with the team until after school today. He accepted the job on Saturday. Funny how every media outlet knew before his players. Also funny how a CovCath player could be quoted in the paper today which means the article was written last night. He promised the team he would meet with them first. IMO Rodenberg is a good coach. IMHO, he's also a better liar.
