John Rodenberg of CovCath has left for Roger Bacon

Featured Replies

Before I judge Rodenberg, I'd be curious to know how he answered the hiring commitee's questions as to how long he intended to stay at CovCath and under what circumstances would he consider leaving to go back to Ohio? Surely they asked those or similar questions. If he said he'd leave if the right job opened up, then I can't see why CovCath people would be upset with him. If he wasn't that honest, then I think CovCath has a right to be upset. Anyone know if those types of questions were asked and if so, what his answers were?

As a Covington Catholic fan and alum, I feel used. With that said, I'll take the state championship and move on without a guy who obviously did not want to be here.

:thumb: Any word on what was said at the meeting today?

That is definately a sentiment that is widely felt.

Yes, because they will have better material than everyone else. Please take it to another thread if you want to debate it.

If this is true, then all the more reason to split the publics and privates. The guru just summed up in one sentence the built-in advantage the privates have.

If you want to debate that false point make a new thread in the public private forum.

Public schools can all do the same thing. Remember, the rules are the same for everyone unless a local school district restricts their own district.

As a member of the first CovCath Varsity Football team, and one who sold those dam chocolate bars, I can't say I feel used. Puzzled, a little mad at him for not letting the team know first, but I don't feel used. Coach R if he is being honest with the media, said he did what he did because of his family. Fair enough. How many adults reading this thread, haven't had to make a choice in their lives because it was for the betterment of their family. Now what I am puzzled about is him leaving CovCath for a school like Roger Bacon, it is a poor excuse of a Football school for leaving CovCath for. Now maybe he knows that Purcell and Roger Bacon are merging, maybe as I have heard he hates teaching that much, and RB is hiring him to coach football and to be the AD, or maybe he feels that it would be easier to win in the GCL North than the schedule CovCath plays. RB schedule doesn't even compare to CovCath see below

I thought Rodenberg was a LaSalle grad?

You were dead on h.s. on the LaSalle thing, that makes this decision even more confusing. He must know something about the possible Bacon/Purcell merger that we do not yet because otherwise this decision is very odd.

I think so as well. Some who have negative feelings for Rodenberg do so because they are still bothered by feelings that Ray was forced out. On leaving after two years, it's no secret Rodenberg wanted to get back to the GCL. CovCath got a state championship out of his two year stay and had a chance for a state title the other year being arguably the second best team in 3A by the time that season ended. Onward and upward...

I haven't heard of anyone that thinks Coach Ray was forced out. And to be honest, you couldn't force him out. He earned the right to stay there as long as he wanted, barring any unforseen circumstances. My negative feelings stemmed from Rodenberg's making it obvious from the first year that he intended to return to Ohio ASAP. It was obvious when the Oak Hills speculation started (that stuff doesn't just formulate out of thin air). The guy wanted no business of the CovCath family and that's his issue to deal with. Good coach, good riddance.

Gotta defend my Spartans and their schedule. Ohio is different than Kentucky and don't get defensive on me. The purpose of the schedule in Kentucky is to make your team better by playing better teams and Cov Cath did that and came away with the crown last year.

If Roger Bacon plays Elder, St X, and Colerain, then they have losses and don't make the playoffs. If Cov Cath is 7-3 like last year, they possibly don't even make the playoffs if they were in Ohio and go to the title game. Columbus Bexley went 8-2 and missed the playoffs in Roger Bacons region. Here's the link. http://www.joeeitel.com/hsfoot/2006region_12.html

By losing to Elder and X, teams get no level 1 and 2 points so it is better to beat a Division 6 team than to lose to a Division 1. The schedule is set up to get teams enough points to the playoffs.

Bacon went 5-5 and I for one am excited about the prospects of getting deep into the playoffs.

Fair point. I like KY's system where you don't need a scheduling guru to figure out how to make the playoffs.

In all seriousness, what coach answers that question with "I'll be here until a better opportunity opens up."? Not a coach that is likely to get the job IMO.........

And thats one of my points. At CovCath you are excepted to play the BIG BOY"S, and you are excepted to win. At Bacon, you play a schedule that you can, and should win. You don't play the really tough schools. My guess is that if CovCath played the Bacon schedule, they would have done just as well on the Ohio side of the river last years, as on the Kentucky side..... Jimmyref, not getting defense at all, but No team that I am aware of on that schedule would have given St. X, or Elder as good of a game as CovCath did... Am I correct?

The Harbin system would preclude CCH from scheduling many of the GCL powers if it was the determining factor in making the postseason.

I believe when Mueller coached in Ohio, he went 10-0 one year and didn't make the playoffs!! The system is twisted across the pond. Good luck in your search CCH...no excuses next fall!
