Newport Central Catholic at Ryle Predictions
OldRaider22 replied to Newcath37's topic in KY Football (High School)
While I don't think that a program like NCC will be "blown out" I do think that Ryle will WEAR them out. I too have had the opportunity to see both play, and I think that Ryle has the better team at this point. That's not saying that NCC CAN'T win, but I think if Ryle executes and does the little things then they will come away with a W. Ryle just has too many big bodies and will simply wear NCC out in the 2nd half. I think its a close one to the half, with Ryle pulling away late and winning by 2 TD's. I'm not sure why the 'Breds fans are so up in arms about some of the predictions. I think some may be reading too much into a win against a very, very bad Covington Catholic(by their standards) team. Don't get me wrong, the 'Breds are a good football team, and will do well in Class AA, but I just don't think they have the horses to upset the Raiders this year. -

The main problem is this is that it is directly prohibited by the rules of the game under Knothole and HS rules. I think the old saying "one bad apple ruins the bunch" applies here. Some kids just take it a little too far. IMO it is a bit bush league and is something that should be phased out of the game. I think it would be much more along the lines of good sportsmanship to root for you team by saying "here we go (pitchers number)" than too root "against" the other team.

Best High School Football player ever
OldRaider22 replied to The Scribe's topic in KY Football (High School)
I thought this was based on the HS accomplishments? Not to sound redundant, but so you'd exclude Marino from a best ever conversation about NFL QB's?? Both of these players are remarkable HS athletes, but to say that one is CLEARLY better than the other......well, IMO your just homering it up there. Just to make sure I'm clear, Shaun Alexander is NOT in the conversation as one of the best HS RB's because he didn't win a state championship? Surely you jest......... I'll tit for tat your comments about the run and shoot with the fact that Brohm didn't HAVE to throw the ball every down. He had some pretty good athletes in McBroom and May running behind him, a solid oline, not to mention IMO probably one of the best HS coordinators in the country calling the shots. Football is a team game, and playing for a great program like Trinity certainly helped Brian out. IMO that's a testament to how great the T program is top to bottom. One great player cannot win state titles by himself, just ask Shaun Alexander....... -
What are we teaching the youth.

LN, I always enjoy and respect your posts but here I have to disagree with you. I thhnk you've taken what I raid a bit out of context. I certainly don't think that backing out on xour word is what Coach Cobb wanus to teach his players.! That being said, surely you can see that there is more to this than simply coaching football. !It appe`rs to md, from seading uhe article that someone posted in the numerous threads on the subject, uhat Coach Cobb's family!wasn't ever exabtly sold on the!idea of going to Henderson Co. They were simply just offering him their support and enbouraginf him to do someuhing thdy knew ie wanted to do. I think that when the reality of the situation set in, they max have siared their true!feelings a little bit mnre. I understand Coach Cobb has a son who is HS age. I'm sure that a move at this point would be a difficult thing for that young man. I don't know about you, but I can never fault a man for wanting to do right by his family. I agree with you that Coach Cobb probably had a good idea of the scenario that he was getting into. But as the saying goes, seeing and doing are two different things. Maybe being immersed in the situation for a week or so out in Henderson Co. left him with some different feelings on the subject. I don't know, just speculation on my part. Finally, I'll ask you this: Suppose Coach Cobb walked into his interview and demanded to know more about the goings on at Henderson Co.(lawsuits, etc.) Along with that suppose that he went into the interview and said I need this thing, and that thing, and this as well. Do you think he gets the job? Of course not. You don't go into an interview and make demands, that is simply not how the process works. You present your plan, and if you are offered the job then you can work out the details at that point. Maybe some details couldn't be agreed upon? There is much, much more to coaching positions than just coaching. You having teaching jobs(for his wife and himself) to consider, as well as facilities, budget, scheduling, etc, etc. All I'm trying to convey is that there is often much more than meets the eye when it comes to these situations. I think K3 said it best "Never judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes". -

Well I would have to tend to agree with this if the following weren't true about coaching: 1. Neither side is completely upfront in the interview process about what they have/want/need. 2. We're not talking about life changing money here, these guys make pennies on the hour. If it is your profession, that's one thing, but surely you can see that there is more to it than just coaching? 3. I'd say loyalty to your family is a pretty good lesson to teach young kids. So is admitting when you were wrong. In reading about this it seems his wife and kids were telling him to go after it, when that may not have been what was really in their hearts. I'm sure after his visit the realization set in that this would actually be happening and maybe some other thoughts were conveyed. 4. I'm not saying this is the case, but there have been several issues surrounding the Henderson Co. football program in recent years. After visiting the coach may have decided, "you know what, I think I have a better situation in Somerset". Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. -
Even in the scenario where the runner walks down the foul line? I'm not sure about that one, I do know that the other version has been deemed legal.
-
None of the above....... it is a travesty to the game Per NFHS rules, the runner is out when: 8-4-2o he positions himself behind a base to get a running start 8-4-2n he runs the bases in a manner to confuse opponents or make a travesty of the game I do believe this is a Beechwood specialty, no? I have seen this before, but not in the manner you described. Usually the runner takes his lead somewhere near the edge of the outfield grass in between 1st and 2nd.

Absolutely.....:thumb:

I know where your going......I get it....... My opinion is that deking is part of the game(at the MLB level) and is not a direct interference or obstruction of a play. Yes, yes I know it indirectly can prevent a runner from advancing and can be a part of a play, but it doesn't have the same connotation as the "I got it" play. Some things are widely accepted as part of the game, some are not. On a side note I saw this at a HS game this year. Runner on 1st. Pitch goes to backstop and SS tells the runner that it was a "foul ball", go back to 1st, upon doing so the player was tagged out. The umpire in the field called time and awarded the runner 3rd base? Not sure if awarding 3rd is correct, but I agree with the sentiment. Should this also be part of the game?
-
Yep, but there is a proper way to do that too...... I see it as part of the (MLB)game, much in the same that holding is part of the NFL game. Some times you get called for it, sometimes you don't, but without it the game would be much different.
-
I personally don't care who it was, its bush, and should be treated as such. I'm not trying to protect anyone, there is simply a certain way with which I was taught to play the game, and that is with class. If you have to do these types of things to win, well then IMO you have no class...... Someone related their thoughts like this: "It's like tricking your younger brother so you can beat him at a board game. Sure you won, but do you really feel good about it?" Obviously I think that it goes without saying that there is a HUGE difference between some things that go on in the pros and those that SHOULD go on in HS games. Bottom line for me is that winning just isn't the #1 priority in my book. Its about doing things the right way...... in fact I think that HS sports as a whole would wholly benefit from dropping the "win at all costs" mantra.
