Dixie Heights vs. Russell Updates (Sweet 16® First Round)

Recommended Posts

Dixie Heights (27-2) successfully navigated one of the top regions in the state to earn the right to rep the 9th at Rupp. Sydney Lockard (12.2 ppg) and Lacy Reinhart (11.6 ppg/64 made 3s) provide sturdy senior leadership, but junior Madelyn Lawson (14.4 PG/8.2 rpg) has emerged as the Colonels' most productive player this season.

Russell (19-5) is back in Lexington, looking to complete a journey left in limbo last year. Shaelyn Steele (13.7 ppg/5 rpg) is one of the state's top freshmen, running the show for the Lady Devils at point guard. Like Dixie Heights, Russell also has a pair of accomplished seniors in Aubrey Hill (14.7 ppg/7 rpg) and Kaeli Ross (10 ppg/91% free throw shooter). Steele, Hill, and Ross have each surpassed 1,000 career points.

Game time is set for tonight at 8pm.

Today's NKY basketball trivia ~

The record book will show Dixie's tournament appearances in 1980, 1992, and now this year.

Kenton County had at one time, a school before Dixie Heights opened in 1936. Its predecessor, Crescent Springs HS, was the only high school between Covington and Erlanger.

The Comets were the Northern Kentucky Regional champions in 1923, '24, '25, '26 and '32. The 1923 team was state runner-up to West Louisville (in WKY) in a game played at the Lexington Armory. The final score? 8-5.

Mr. Niemi and Coach Steczynski should hang those banners too.

Tonight's game? Lesko Colonels!
