What is the over/under for deaths in America due to COVID-19 in 2020?

We’re on track to hit the over today, sad as it is to say.

Yesterday's total was again higher than the leading daily killers in this country: heart disease and cancer. In fairness, yesterday's daily total was spiked a bit because of the new counting method in New York.

It's not really a new counting method, but a new category that the CDC wants measured. It's a new column altogether for home deaths likely due to Covid-19. New York lists it separately but some have been reporting it together. Currently, that is somewhat of an estimate, but no doubt that there are people dying at home.

Yep, and still not at peak in most places. And we blew past the over in less than a month. The numbers will end up in 6 figures. And yet, people still want to open up, and get on with life. Because it's still mostly older people or people with underlying conditions that's dying. Of course don't most people who die naturally die because of existing conditions? It's not like people just drop dead of nothing. And most everybody will end up with some "underlying condition" at some point in time. And it shouldn't mean we just write you off and let the virus finish you off.

Nah, gotta protect the economy.

And black people. Don’t forget black people are dying at a higher rate than anyone else in America even though blacks only make up 13% of the US population.

I can’t wait to get my chance to cheat death when they open America back up. Need some spice in my life.

I hope my Mom and Dad don’t have to die alone.

US is now over 34,200 deaths from CV19. If you took the under like I did a month ago, you lose.

Are we done with the flu talk now?

We’ve moved to depression and suicide rates now.

Not trying to say that this isn't terrible and 34,000 deaths isn't bad, but discounting the flu is not right either. This is from 2017-2018.

An estimated 80,000 Americans died of flu and its complications last winter, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This means it was the deadliest season in more than four decades -- since 1976, the date of the first published paper reporting total seasonal flu deaths, said CDC Spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund.

It’s a good thing the flu isn’t as contagious and that we have a vaccine for it. Imagine if we didn’t have a vaccine and it was as contagious as COVID-19. Flu deaths would quadruple.

This article also mentions how kids increase the spread of the flu throughout the community because they drool and snot all over the place.

I have a hard time believing schools will be ready to be opened when August/September roll around.

I found this interesting.

Flashback

NYC had a population of 5 million during the Spanish Flu. The city endured three bouts with the disease that killed around 30k New Yorkers over an 18 month period.

Fast Forward

NYC has around 8 million people in 2020. With a century of medical and technological advancement has had over 18k people die of CV in around 45 days.

Everything is fine.

How many people do you know personally - family, neighbor, co-worker - that has died directly from coronavirus infection?

I know one person so far whose death was related to the situation, though likely not from the virus itself.

I know 1 so far but several others who had to go to the ICU for several days. Had at least 3 former students (in either their 20s or 30s) that have been hospitalized.

No one and actually I hope it remains that way.

No one that I know of and I hope it stays that way. My sister was exposed to it at work, tested for it(negative) and now she is working from home after her employer dragged their feet on accommodating everyone.

So far that is my closest experience.

There was a woman from work who returned from Wuhan earlier this year(we have a plant there) and was sick for 2 weeks but officially she was just sick. Never was tested. Never quarantined.
