Open Job: Boyle County

Featured Replies

I’ve only heard Pardue and Smith. The rest of the staff is fairly young besides Coach Hester and I doubt he retires before his son graduates.

Hey, now. Coach Hester is NOT old. He is the same age as me.

:lol2: :lol2:

We are all close in age and I am far from fairly young. :lol2: :lol2:

For the record my gut says he stays at South Warren but I think it is going to be a super hard decision to make.

I’m not sure what Boyle County can offer him that he doesn’t already get at South Warren.

The most obvious difference to me is 4A vs 5A.

Second, would be that SW is in a multi-school district and that in itself brings its own set of problems.

That last sentence is the glaring difference to me. I just wonder if that is enough for him to leave? My gut says no. Can’t lie, this is a fascinating story.

For me it comes down to 2 things:

1. Does he want to come back home and Coach where his dad did? That seems like an easy yes, but it may not be. South Warren is a nice school, but there is only 1 home town.

2. Does his wife want to come? If momma ain't happy; ain't nobody happy...

It is a fascinating story.

Exactly. :lol2:

Pretty big news. Brandon Smith would be the frontrunner but the more intriguing question is who Boyle hires if he turns it down.

So the names that have been mentioned thus far....

Brandon Smith - Current South Warren head coach. Boyle County grad.

Bill Mason - Current Boyle County MS head coach. Former HC at Nelson County & Mercer County.

Nate McPeek - Current Frederick Douglass offensive coordinator. Former HC at Fairview.

Travis Leffew - Current assistant coach at Boyle County. Former HC at Lincoln County. Boyle County grad.

To add to that, I think Boyle County is a much better job than South Warren but I don’t know that his situation would be significantly different at Boyle County than it is at South Warren. Only Brandon knows what it would take for him to leave.

I’ll also add that Boyle County needing an OC is a nice checkmark for Brandon to have in order to bring his OC, Matthew McCloud, with him.

Not disagreeing, but why do you think Boyle is a much better job.

I have to think that Brandon Smith and Nate McPeek, who's the current OC at Frederick Douglass, are going to be the two favorites for the job.

Not sure I would put McPeek as a candidate. But that might just be me.

I will attempt to tackle this one, but I am not the original poster, so simply my opinion on the matter.

1. Do not have to compete with several schools that have winning traditions for players from that area. (Bowling green, other warren co school) Also, not only compete for those players but play against them in a district game.

2. The SW tradition is new, not saying there is anything wrong with it, but Boyle winning ways have deeper roots.

3. Boyle is in an upgrade status when it comes to the facilities over the next couple of years, allowing the next coach some say in what gets done.

4. The fan base rivals that of any school (almost every state title game played in set records for attendance for that class it maybe every year but I don't know 2019 numbers)

5. Brandon specific it's home, and according to Dabo Swinny, when momma calls you to come home, then you go home.

With all that said, I have to be honest I don't know much about SW, so I cant genuinely say that any of this is better SW for sure.

What has happened at Danville? Have all the good players headed to Boyle? They were always a great program and perhaps they are just in a down cycle. Sometimes it's tough to follow a legend even if you are his son. As long as the talent holds up he'll be ok.

So who is the dark horse in this good ole fashion off season derby? All of the before mentioned candidates have already been disputed by other readers (contributors) for one reason another (legitimate or not).

Who is the coach that comes knockin' on Boyle County's door and administration and boosters are surprised and excited? A guy who may have just left the state within a year or two? Someone noone thought would leave but is maybe on the back 9 of his career? An up and coming first time head man with ties to the community (or absolutely none at all which makes him attractive)?

Anyone have any?

Next season's Jr. class was Middle School runner-up and the Soph. class where State Champions.

Boyle has D1 Tommy Ziesmer, and soon to be Jackson Smith. RB McDaniel is back along with most of the O-Line. Recievers, Shepardson, Clark, and Little Lanter are all back. Boyle will be in the mix for the next few seasons.

All the players mentioned above are great players. Boyle is going to be a really good team next year and the years to come. This 2020 class has been in the works since middle school and a lot of time and effort has been put in for this group to be successful in high school. With this 2020 class not winning state the last two years I think it may be a while before another Boyle team wins state. Doesn't mean they won't have great teams and it is extremely hard to win a state title. I just think this was their best chance to win state for a while these last two years. Brandon Smith is a great coach and he could get them on another run though.

I can't see Boyle giving the job to anyone without any head coaching experience regardless of their success as a coordinator. I don't think age, too young or too old, would make as much of a difference as experience and proven track record. French was not spring chicken when he was hired. Plan B is the real question here. The Boyle administrators are some pretty smart guys so the obvious first call is to Brandon Smith as so many have already mentioned. If Brandon turns it down then I would imagine the Rebels would get a very good response to the job opening and I feel they would have chance to talk to several pretty good candidates.
