When that coke vs pepsi switch happened, I was amazed at how much that bothered people. Coke and pepsi are pretty much interchangeable for me. Coke vs pepsi plays zero factor for me when I think about where to eat. I have no clue which restaurant carries which brand.

Coke Freestyle is trash.

The Frisch’s in Covington in the old building with drive up service before they moved across the street was the first restaurant for me as a kid when the waitresses still had beehive hairdos, and I was always amazed seeing them carry their trays, and especially when hot fudge cakes were on them. I’m guessing around 1967 when going out to dinner in our large family was a rarity, but a damn big deal when we did.

 

I’ve always loved Frisch’s and the Big Boy sandwich is my normal go to though I do like a lot of other sandwiches and selections from their menu. . I also love their vegetable soup, and especially for hangovers.

 

Real happy they’ve changed recently to crinkle cut fries because their last fry was awfully greasy and didn’t travel well for carry out as they would instantly go soggy.

 

A friend of mine will still go there, but apparently they’ve changed their cole slaw which made him rather angry.

 

All in all I still like them however it annoys me at the newer one in Covington when they often don’t prioritize a server to be available to seat you while other employees ignore you like it’s not their job. Sure one will eventually pop up, but waiting long even when they’re not busy grinds my gears. Same thing when you go to pay and no one is to be found at the front counter.

I had a Big Boy last week, and it was as delicious as ever.

Ironically, I ran into someone who works at the Frisch's commissary. I asked him about some of the topics in this thread.

 

1. The Big Boy patty size has not changed. He said that is closely monitored at the commissary. Patties are weighed and quality control makes sure the patties are consistent. I asked him direct and he said the patty size has not changed.

 

2. Buns - He said they have never made their buns since he has been there, and he has been there a long time. They have used Klosterman's for years. He wasn't 100% certain but to his knowledge, Klosterman's still makes their buns.

 

3. He too was amazed at the coke vs pepsi uproar but is glad they are back with coke because the customers wanted it.

 

4. He is not a fan of the new owners. He admitted they have been doing a good job upgrading facilities. His issue with the new owners is the culture in the company has changed now that it is not a family owned business and the new owners just aren't plugged in to the heritage of the restaurant. Many of the baked goods that customers loved are not being made any more. Most importantly, sales are down and that is a big concern.

I go with the Buddy Boy, but order it on grilled Texas Toast. That and a bowl of chili! OMG!

Ill make this a Frisch's story. Since it was a childhood memory in 1977.

 

Iron Horsemen leader, Moose, was killed in a gang fight with the Seven Sons. He was buried in Ft. Thomas. Anyway, I was in the old Frisch's in Ft. Thomas eating with my mother when the funeral procession went by. I guess about 300 bikers. The whole building shook. The plates, silverware and glasses rattled. It was etched into my memory.

I've been to Frisch's about three times to eat in the last year, but I'll swing by the drive through every couple of months on average to get a vanilla Diet Coke...which beats the pants off of that vanilla Diet Pepsi garbage.

 

My go-to has always been the Big Boy and a bowl of vegetable soup. The vegetable soup has been my favorite menu item for years at this point. The vegetable soup tastes as good as ever, and is as good as any prescription medication when you have a bad cold or strep throat, but I would argue that it has fewer actual veggie chunks in it in recent years.

 

The only other things I really ever order are the Swiss Miss (burger, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tartar sauce in a rye bun), the patty melt, and the fish on rye. Those are always pretty consistently good, but my observation is that sometimes the Big Boy gets flubbed. I wonder if the Big Boy doesn't get flubbed sue to the fact that the folks in the kitchen make them so often, compared to other menu items.

As to patty size, your commisary friend ought to look at picture of BigBoy on the menu and then at one lately I had been served. Patty might be 75-80% of the picture. As to the bun, Klosterman's might have been the provider for multiple years, but it has changed to a very dry-tasteless nothing. As mentioned in some other posts, the coleslaw has also radically changed for the worst. Oh, well, Frisch's is no longer a dining option I consider.

My son and I stopped in at the Covington location on Friday for lunch. I opted for the Super Big Boy, since I hadn't had breakfast that morning. Burger arrived hot (as the cheese had been properly melted) and with plenty of sauce on it. It's not going to take the place of something that you can get at Zips or Bards...but it was palatable and fit the bill on that day.

 

That being said, this was the exception to the norm for my last 4 or 5 visits. I understand what was being described in the OP. Have had experiences with the Frisch's in Florence and Dry Ridge where the Big Boy was a fail. (Burger not hot/cheese not melted/little sauce) In those instances, maybe it's the people at each location fixing the food?

Usually always the issue.

 

I have found that Frisch's on Dream Street, Frisch's in Erlanger next to the old Furniture Fair, and Frisch's in Fort Wright at Kyles and Dixie are always really solid. Conversely, the Frisch's in Florence at the intersection of Turfway and Hwy 18 (by Boone Co. HS) is usually a hard pass for me.

At the end of the day, Frisch's is a fast food joint... What do you expect out of a burger they mass produce daily?
