The style thing doesn’t concern me much. No doubt I’d prefer he figure out a better defensive game plan than he has had at X to this point, but after watching miserable, stagnant offense at UofL for much of the last several seasons, it’s hard for me not to want in on some of that.

 

As for his ability to compete with the ACC Old Guard, I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t question our ability to compete with them with Mack at the helm. The truth is that I question that for just about every potential candidate. And FWIW, we had a Hall of Fame coach for our first three years in the ACC and he managed just one win over Virginia in SIX TRIES and one win each over UNC and Duke.

 

In the end, when I put together a list of potential coaches I would want, Mack is in there. When I narrow that list down to people that the university actually has a reasonable shot of getting to come here, then Mack is at the top.

 

If anyone is ever looking for my opinion on matters at UofL, just ask @Getslow. We are on the same page 95% of the time, and he's much smarter than me. :lol2:

I’ve thought about that before, but waiting on Coach K to retire seems like a losing proposition. That guy always seems to bounce back.

He may stay at X, I agree that's a real possibility.

 

X cannot get anywhere close in money if UofL doesn't want them to. There is no arguing that point.

UL will be a player regardless. I'd like Mack to stay at X to keep them in the top ten conversation. I know they've had a list of great coaches but you never know when that will end. On the other hand, if they didn't get Mack UL is still going to get a top level coach.

 

I disagree that they'd be a player regardless. UK wasn't as much of a player as we wanted to pretend they were during Tubby's last year and especially with BCG. UL could always swing and miss with a coach as well.

One site is reporting a 10 year 5 Million a year deal.... If that is guaranteed, tough to turn down. Rumor also has it that Xavier is trying to put together a package that would pay him approx 3 Million a year for 6 years....either way the Mack family is going to get a big pay day out of this... as an XU fan I hope he stays...but I fear the $$ maybe too much to turn down.

I can't imagine him not taking it, if offered. Just a no brainer. Much easier to recruit there. He can get a different kind of kid than at X. I didn't even mention $$$, which there is no comparison. Young family, ties to the city, it will set him up for life, even moreso than he probably already is.

Trump card is little to know buyout; especially if the NCAA hammer hits hard. Giving him this level of control with guaranteed longterm money, hard to imagine him not jumping.

He only plans on coaching another 10 years or so. If he's going to take a shot, now is the time...

His wife, the former Christy (sp) Hester, is from Louisville and was quite a basketball player in her own right at Holy Cross H.S. and the University of Dayton. I assume her family lives in Louisville. Maybe that might be a (perhaps slight) factor in his decision.
