All these names floating around are good names to hear but will be very unlikely. A strong fraternity has been established within the Purples football program; from the school superintendent to the booster and faithful fans down to the current coaching staff. That fraternity was built through Coach Wallace these past 20 years.

People love starting rumors of who they "heard" may be given a look. I get it.

Make no mistake about it; when the committee is selected to find the next coach, they will go to 1 person - Kevin Wallace. Whoever Coach Wallace says he would recommend is who will be their guy. End of discussion. Yes, they have to create a "short list" and go through the motions of interviews but it will all come down to Coach Wallace's pick.

It is a 99% probability that the next coach already has a lot of Purples gear in his closet.

Yes, the principal is the one who makes the hire not the A.D.

Let's say Spader doesn't get the job despite going after it hard. Then what for the new coach? Do you keep him as the DC who is also your AD?

Many suggest that if you are on the outside and running for a job against a very viable candidate on the inside who is going for it as well; that things don't always turn out for the best in that working relationship (so, part ways) and I'd have to agree more times than not that it's accurate.

There are many more factors that are going into 1) who wants it and 2) who actually steps up to take it more so than most think by just looking on the surface.

I am going to say they keep it in the BG family.

Mark Spader, if he says no for some reason then I think Jeff Griffith gets it and opens up Warren East.

Hiring Coach Grif would be good, but there may be things outside of football that keep that from happening. But from a football standpoint and what he did while a DC at BG, one couldn’t argue if they went that route.

There's a video that went around after South Warren's win over Bowling Green that I would have to get to the bottom of before I took a look at Brandon Smith. That stuff starts at the top. I'm sure Bowling Green hasn't forgotten that.

Very valid point. I'm sure it's something the BG selection committee would look into.

Do not like the "automatic" stay in house pick. Shuts out potential good candidates and is very short sighted imo. Highlands did this and you see where it has gotten them.

In house makes sense in some situations more than others. With Bowling Green being one of the premier jobs in the state, along with the fact that the city has grown tremendously and looks like it will continue to do so, why not open up the process? There will be any number of good candidates interested in this position. If the best candidate happens to be at Bowling Green right now, then hire him. But there's no sense in limiting your own choices.

Uh, my man, Highlands and Bowling Green..... two very different schools... with very different communities.

Not saying that giving others a sniff is the wrong move, but somebody who is familiar with the culture and those surrounding the program will be most beneficial.

Look what happened to Feggins at Warren Central.

Apples and Potatoes. Bill Cox wasn't really from the area and had decent success at Central. Mike Rogers knew about Central in that he had coached against them. Those guys are two of the four winningest coaches at Warren Central. Unpacking everything that happened with Feggins could take forever, and at the end of the day, the trajectory of Warren Central then and Bowling Green now are so dissimilar that there isn't even any value in trying to make that comparison.

I look at the last two hiring processes that Bowling Green has had to undertake. When they got Dan Haley, what did he have to do with Bowling Green beforehand? He was born in Pineville, attended UK, coached at Paducah and Bryan Station as well as in the college ranks. No ties to Bowling Green whatsoever. He only became their winningest coach to that point, and getting them their first state title.

They didn't go outside for the next one though. No sir, they knew exactly who they were getting as soon as Dan Haley stepped down. There could only be one name on anyone's list: Steve Long. It didn't get more inside or familiar with the culture than that. And then came the politics and the fury that led him to leave before ever coaching a game, severing a very fruitful relationship between him and his alma mater, and a pretty lasting grudge. Enter Kevin Wallace, who had to coach his first year under the dreaded interim tag. Obviously Wallace was familiar with the program, but he'd just been there two years despite being from the area and coaching at Warren East. Still, it's not like he'd been a dyed in the wool Purple at that point.

There is no magic bullet scenario when making a hire. Sometimes the internal hire is a slam dunk. Sometimes a fresh perspective is a great choice. There are factors such as desire for the job, expected longevity, and on and on. If Bowling Green doesn't at least kick the tires before making up their mind that it has to be someone from within the walls, then they've made a mistake. (And I recognize that you said it wouldn't be wrong to do so.) The Purples have a high standard to match given their last two hires, but I'm confident they know what they're doing. But I don't think it's a definite that someone who is already embedded is the no questions correct choice, though they very well may be.

If anyone hasn't answered this, Haywood has been @ Belfry since the mid 80's. 1984 I do believe.

That would be an intriguing hire! Would his kids have to sit out a year if he transferred them to BG?

I couldn’t see why they’d be denied with the father get the job of it was to happen..

That was taken care of immediately. The locker room was cleaned up and restored to order last I was told. Much ado about nothing.

This is pretty much where I sit with this. All I keep seeing and hearing is Spader, Spader, Spader. That’s cool and if he gets it then good for him. Even more so if he is the best choice. I still wonder who all will put in for the job and if a proven big name puts in for the job will he have a realistic chance at landing the job?
