September 6, 20179 yr 8 pm update: Potentially catastrophic category 5 hurricane Irma is nearing the northern Leeward Islands. Weather conditions will deteriorate over the islands soon. It is located about 85 miles east of Antigua. Maximum sustained winds are 185 mph with higher gusts. Movement is west at 15 mph. A turn to the west-northwest is forecast to begin tonight and continue for the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the extremely dangerous core of Irma will move over the portions of the northern Leeward Islands tonight and early Wednesday, move near or over portions of the northern Virgin Islands Wednesday, and pass near or just north of Puerto Rico late Wednesday and Wednesday night. Irma is an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. When should I leave Orlando? :lol2:

September 6, 20179 yr Tampa? If you want some kind definitive date, I don't know what to tell you. The storm will not show it's true colors until sometime Saturday night or Sunday. Until we know exactly where the storm will make landfall, everything is a guess. Plan for the worse. Hope for the best. That's all one can do. Hillsborough County Public Schools will make a decision regarding school closure by the end of the day, today. Tampa is the county seat of Hillsborough County. My daugther and her family plan on heading north tomorrow.
September 6, 20179 yr Coming back from my daughter's home, this evening, Mrs. and I stopped at a CVS close to our home to get a birthday card. It was after midnight. They had water, but it was being sold under the supervision of 3 Hillsborough County Sheriffs Deputies. Maximum of 3 24 packs a person. They were running out, so I only took 2, as did the guy behind me. I guess there had been a near riot when they ran out of water earlier in the day.

September 6, 20179 yr I have a relative living in Ft Myers Florida. Finding gas to get out of town is already a problem there as is finding groceries. Guess my sons trip to Antigua is off, though Sandals will not officially say so.

September 6, 20179 yr I understand your point of view, so please do not take this as a critique, either. It's an explanation. This is the bottom line that explains why I stay. You are retired. I have a job with a certain amount of responsibilities. I just cannot just up and leave. Others rely on me doing my job in times like this, so that they have jobs to come back to. Therefore, I have to find a way to stay to protect my home and my place of employment, the best I can. If I lose either, life is not going to be much fun the rest of the way. I'm trying to talk Mrs. S into leaving with my daughter, should she decide to go. Mrs. S is hard headed, though. Just sayin'. That's very admirable of you Swampy, and please don't take this as being critical, but what does any of that matter if you're dead? I understand not wanting to skirt your responsibilities, but in order to meet those responsibilities you have to be alive and well. And as others have said, stay safe down there and I'll be keeping you and yours in my thoughts and prayers.
