September 5, 20179 yr Author Have family in Tampa area...what are the odds this thing hits the Bay area? Hard to say this far out. I think they'll at least get brushed by Irma
September 5, 20179 yr My father lives in Ft. Myers he's considering leaving Thursday depending on what it looks like. Hopefully it dies down.
September 5, 20179 yr Have family in Tampa area...what are the odds this thing hits the Bay area? As nWo pointed out earlier in this thread, Governor Scott has issued a state of emergency. I'm near the Citrus Park Mall, have lived here for over 35 years, and I'm battening down the hatches. If they have Spectrum Cable have them keep an eye on Bay News 9. Mrs. S is monitoring Channel 28. All of the local broadcast stations are on top of it, though. Please refer to post #34 in this thread for more information about the Tampa Bay Area.
September 5, 20179 yr Author Tuesday morning update: 5 am EDT just released information Hurricane Irma is a major cat. 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. If there is a strengthing of just 7 mph Irma will become a cat 5 hurricane. Present movement is west at 14 mph. There are no watches or warnings as of yet for the continental US but confidence is growing with each model run that Irma will affect Florida and the US coast. Here is what the 8 pm 9/5/17 GFS model is showing when the morning run is released I will post what it shows. It is still showing landfall in southern Florida. Irma is predicted to be a cat 4 at landfall. Other important information for the public. One thing of note everyone should be aware of the possibility of tornadoes also from Irma. This looks to be a very dangerous and life threatening situation. Those in hurricane prone areas should finish their hurricane preparations now.
September 5, 20179 yr Author Just released as I feared earlier. Irma is now a dangerous cat 5 hurricane. I will update info shortly.
September 5, 20179 yr Author Irma has become an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane. Preparations should be rushed to completion in any hurricane warning areas. Irma continues to move westward at 14 mph. This general motion is expected to continue today. An expected turn toward the west-northwest should happen tonight. Reports from NOAA and US Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicates that Irma continues to strengthen and maximum sustained winds have increased to near 175 mph with gust higher than that. Irma is an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next day or two, but Irma is forecast to remain a powerful category 4 or 5 hurricane during the next couple of days. A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED SOMEWHERE WITHIN THE WARNING AREA. A WARNING IS TYPICALLY ISSUED 36 HOURS BEFORE THE ANTICIPATED FIRST OCCURRENCE OF TROPICAL-STORM- FORCE WINDS...CONDITIONS THAT MAKE OUTSIDE PREPARATIONS DIFFICULT OR DANGEROUS. IN THIS CASE...FOR SOME OF EASTERNMOST ISLANDS...THE HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS. PREPARATIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY SHOULD BE RUSHED TO COMPLETION. A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED SOMEWHERE WITHIN THE WARNING AREA IN THIS CASE WITHIN 36 HOURS.
September 5, 20179 yr Author The morning GFS run shows a little more of a hit for eastern parts of Florida then Irma moving back out into the Atlantic then a second landfall near Georgia/South Carolina. We will see fluctuations in the course of Irma as we get closer to the weekend. The Canadian model I also use sometimes has Irma missing or grazing southern Florida then moving into the Gulf of Mexico before making its turn to the north and making landfall in the panhandle of Florida. So there is still some uncertainty on Irma's track.
September 5, 20179 yr Irma now has maximum sustained winds at 175 mph. Wow. That would be catastrophic
September 5, 20179 yr Scary stuff, nWo. Thanks for keeping us posted. I'm praying for all in that path.
