It was great to see Willis and Hawkins become good players after 4 years.

I hate both teams equally. There were missed calls on both sides as well as ticky tacky bad calls. It's the way this entire season has been. Blows me away some of you guys can actually blame the refs for the outcome.

 

Let's try our hardest to not lump all of us UK fans on the board together with that. Plenty of us here that don't think the officials are why the Cats lost. I sure don't. We had it right there and let it slip out.

As I have said before, Bam has no low post moves and can't shoot a 10 footer. He is not an offensive threat other than dunks and follow shots.

I admit I was a little over-the-top on some of my earlier posts. I had been on Catspause site reading a bunch of those post and I suppose the hyperbole of those posters and the game only 12 hours since the finish got my Big Blue blood pressure rising. I'm the same way during games when posting updates then re-read them later and wish I could take some of them back.

 

I'm still aggravated with John Higgins and a few calls but UK had chances to win a didn't take advantage of them. Missed layups, free throws, and some crucial treys toward the end, particularly by Willis, would have been more than enough to have won the game if they had made them, or at least a few of them.

Congrats to you @NKYknowitall the Tarheels are the best team in the Nation (imo) have been all year if they play their game no one will be them. I did not think they played their best tonight but unfortunately neither did the Cats.

 

I don't think they did either. They're fortunate to have gotten out of their with the win. Gotta bring it Saturday, Oregon will be no slouch.

You obviously didn't go back and read your comments from last year.

So I was born and raised in NC and have been a Tarheel fan all my life. However, I have now been in KY almost 29 years...quite a bit longer than my time spent growing up in NC (left home for the military at 18 and have not lived in NC since). People ask me all the time why I still like UNC and don't like UK, in their eyes that's how it should be, that I should be rooting for UK. After games like this and seeing the posts on social media and listening to the radio call in shows...does anyone really have to ask that question?

 

When I ask these same people the same question... if they moved to NC would they stop rooting for UK and be UNC or maybe Duke fans, I get a lot of hemming and hawing and comments like "well thats not the same". Really? Why isn't it? And by the way, I don't think they SHOULD drop their allegiance.

 

In my years here in KY I have found it much easier to root for UL as their fan base isn't nearly as hard to take as much (didn't say all) of the UK fan base is in basketball.

 

Being a transplant who has spent over 40 years in the Bluegrass state, I get the same thing and feel the same way.

 

Wife hates it when I don't watch UK on television (I watched reruns of American Pickers last night) or wear UK stuff, and tells me I should be a Wildcat fan because I live here. When I ask he what school she will support when we (hypothetically) move to (let's randomly choose a zip code - 27708) another location, I get the "my blood will always be UK blue" response.

Here is the problem that nobody thinks about. Those fans are at every school, the reason that you see so much of it is because the majority of the people that we all interact with are a fan of the same team. Duke fans, Louisville fans, UNC fans, they all complain but we do not have 500 of them on our timelines, etc. Are there terrible fans that cheer for UK that are sore losers? Definitely. But is it inflated a little bit because most of the people we surround ourselves with our Cats fans? I think so too. I am as big of a UK fan as anyone, but do I blame the officials for the loss? No. Do I think they missed some obvious fouls in the 1st half that hurt UK? Yes. But I do think there were some fouls that could have been called on UK also that they probably got away with.

 

At the end of the day, I don't think there are anymore bad apples that cheer for UK as compared to any other team, we just see it the most with UK because of where we are and the people we associate ourselves with.

 

I think that you are spot on with most of this. A larger fan base will have a larger number of bad apples. Probably not much different than Alabama football fans.

For the record, I agree about not abandoning your rooting interest, but to piggyback, I find it equally funny at the amount of people who shame fans of a team who didn't go to that school. It's often a criticism I see of Kentucky fans in particular because so many did not attend UK. I don't understand that line of thinking, particularly for people who grew up a fan of the team before they ever thought about college. Plus, college is about your career, not choosing a place specifically so you can feel justified in rooting for a team.
