I don't dislike Monk. I just see him as being an underperformer. He should be so much better. That is why the NBA talent evaluators like him. His talent is off the charts. NBA drafts potential and Monk has it. The question is when is it going to show up on the floor in any area other than shooting the ball.

 

Anyone who watched that game yesterday and paid attention saw Jackson embarrass Monk. Jackson played shut down defense on Monk and Cal didn't want Monk guarding Jackson. Jackson hit tough shots, had assists, had rebounds, 1 turnover - Jackson punked Monk yesterday and I am not sure Monk was even that bothered by it.

You're absolutely right. It was. I thought Kentucky had the momentum needed after the UCLA win to get by UNC, even while thinking UNC was the better team. Jackson shut down Monk, Cats were manhandled on the boards for most of the game, and UK shot bad from the stripe. Had several opportunities to get it done and couldn't. It happens.

I am not going to your extreme in that he "wasn't bothered," but I would take Jackson today. He is a 22 year old, 6'8" junior that is long. Monk projects better to the NBA (though he will be undersized as a two guard), but he was a Freshman and it reflected many times during the year. All season if his shot wasn't falling it affected his entire game. Not many times was he able to overcome being cold from the field. I do feel he competed more on the defensive end as the season progressed. I think the inconsistency issues will go away in the NBA with more practice time.

I don't think there's a game thread on here that you haven't criticized Monk. Just be honest about it. You don't like him for some reason.

I would have liked to have seen Kentucky run a few sets for Monk to penetrate and perhaps draw a foul or two on Jackson. First, it might have put him on the bench. Second, he would have had to slack off defensively a bit, which would have opened up the perimeter for Monk.

Anyways that says that Cals players don't care and that this is just a stepping stone should watch Bam and DeAaron after the game balling their eyes out. What Cal does is amazing. He does what it takes most coaches 4 years to do. He turns teams into brothers and he does it year after year. Absolutely amazing.

 

BUT people on here are saying they hope he goes to the NBA, wake up, every time we lose it's not because Cal got out-coached!!!

It was very clear to everyone, not just Kentucky fans, that the officiating was suspect in the first half. That being said, Kentucky held a 5-point lead with 5 minutes to go and should have extended that lead and won the game. Instead, Roy Williams switched to a zone defense, Kentucky took 3 consecutive poor shots, UNC went on a run and took a 5-point lead of their own. Then Malik Monk hit a huge 3-pointer to tie it and Maye nailed the game-winner in a flash. Great shot. Game over. Congrats North Carolina :thumb:

 

I'm not bitter or upset with the loss. I think Kentucky had a great season and a run to the Elite 8 is nothing to hang heads about. Sometimes the other guy just makes a big shot and that's what happened here.

Given the circumstances I was proud of how UK competed yesterday. With the back court sidelined, the game could have gotten out hand mid-way in the first half. Both have been maligned (justifably) at times, but Briscoe and Hump were huge yesterday. Briscoe was the driving force of keeping UK in the game and Hump was who I thought he would be coming into the season.

You can go on and on all day but the officials played a major role in the game, especially in the first half. You know it, I know it and everyone else who watched the game knows it.

 

But it was only against Kentucky, allegedly. Carolina didn't have any called against them, you're right. No team is allowed to ever be better and it's a shame. It's ALWAYS something

I was very confident going into the half only down five. With Fox, Monk and Bam all missing the last 6-7 minutes of the half (Willis the last 4-5 too), I was very surprised to see them keep it within a couple possessions.
