October 6, 20169 yr Author The winds rotating around the storm (concentrated around the eye, or center) are moving at 140. They are essentially blowing in a circle. The entire system itself is only moving along at 14 mph. Lol I may just start directly PMing you for my questions from now on you've had my back today. It also depends on the what latitude the hurricane is located. The further north a hurricane is the more of a chance it would be affected by upper atmospheric steering winds so its forward speed would increase greatly.
October 6, 20169 yr Just drove down to Tenn via 75. Saw 5-6 convoys of electric companies to the rescue. Prayers to them for a safe journey.
October 6, 20169 yr All the Bay Area schools will be closed tomorrow. Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Pasco, Polk, Citrus, and Hernando Counties systems will be closed. Tampa Bay's hotels are full from those evacuating from the east coast. I-75, I-275, and I-4 are parking lots west and north bound.
October 6, 20169 yr Talked to my cousin earlier and they are not leaving there home the next 24 hours is going to be nerve-wracking.
October 6, 20169 yr What really struck me is how long it is going to ride up the coast...looks like it is going to impact a far wider stretch along the ocean front than any recent hurricanes have. I was thinking the same thing. If this Hurricane follows it's predicted track, it's going to effect a lot of people and cost a ton of money to repair it's destruction. On top of that, it may circle back around and hit Jamaica, the Bahama's or even South Florida a second time. I've seen storm surge estimates of 9-11 feet from central Florida to the north, which would be devastating to that low lying area. Florida is pretty much flat along the coastline, a 9-11ft storm surge would affect a lot of homes/businesses.
October 6, 20169 yr Just got back into this thread. Of course, my flight to Orlando for my conference was cancelled and I could not reconnect. Staying at home in dry Taylor Mill. My friends went down early and are hunkered down in hotels. They hope to resume the conference on Saturday. I'm wondering if they will have power.
October 6, 20169 yr Parents are bracing for it. They're calling for 115 mph winds tomorrow. "Mandatory evacuation", but they (and several of the neighbors) are staying put. They say there's no room at the inn all the way to Atlanta.

People that have been around for a long time have heard of several storms that were supposed to be "bad," they hung around for them and they weren't that bad. So it's kinda "Boy who cried wolf" for a lot of people. I've known a few people that stayed put for hurricanes before, they did not do it more than once.
October 7, 20169 yr They are stubborn. My parents are definitely stubborn, no doubt about it. They're also 84 and 80, and mom is recovering from minor back surgery. She's not supposed to walk up steps, or travel farther than in town. They've been told that there are no rooms for at least an 8-hour drive. Their neighbor has a ginormous generator. They're staying.
